4. RESPIRATION AND BLOOD CIRCULATION How does blood flow through the gills?
Deoxygenated blood reaches the gills by way of afferent branchial arteries. The blood passes through the gill lamellae where it is oxygenated. It then passes to efferent branchial arteries <strong>and</strong> on to the body. Capillaries in the gill lamellae are extremely close to the water interface <strong>and</strong> are undoubtedly more involved in gas exchange than those in the gill filaments.
