harvesting, the germination was reduced to 52%; after 40 days of storage of seeds, there<br />
was a complete loss of viability. Besides, the seeds sown during the first week<br />
germinated within 20-25 days; afterwards 32-42 days were required for germination . as<br />
the seeds have a shirt period of viability, they are sown without much delay. Raised seed<br />
beds are made 1m wide and of suitable length with adequate provision of drainage. The<br />
seeds are sown in lines 12 cm apart and are covered with a layer of soil to a thickness of<br />
about 2.5 cm. The beds have to be provided with artificial shade and watered regularly.<br />
Germination occurs in about 20- 25 days. The seedlings are transferred to mud pots or<br />
polyethylene bags when they are 6 months old.<br />
TRANSPLANTING SEEDLINGS INTO POLYTHENE BAGS<br />
THE SEEDLINGS ARE TRANSPLANTED INTO POLYTHENE BAGS( 30<br />
CM×15 cm) containing a mixture of soil, sand and well decomposed FYM(3:3:1), when<br />
they are of about 15 cm height. The seedlings are ready for planting in the main field<br />
when they are 1 year old.<br />
PROPOGATION OF <strong>CINNAMON</strong> BY CUTTING<br />
Cinnamon can also be propogated by cuttings. Vegetative cuttins of cinnmon with<br />
1 or 2 leaves can be made to root within 40 days under humid conditions in a closed bin<br />
propogator with diffused light. Seradix could hasten their rooting. Cutting kept in a moist<br />
coir dust in a polythene bag roots within 60 days.<br />
TRANSPLANTING SEEDLINGS<br />
Seedlings are tansplanted in the main field when they are about 10-12 months old<br />
at a spacing of 2 cm between plants and rows. The planting is done in pits of 60 cubic<br />
cm which are dug earlier and filled with compost and top soil. The most appropriate time<br />
for planting is June- July in order to take advantage of the South –west monsoon prevails.<br />
In the early period, it is necessary to provide artificial shade. Seedlings grow well in the<br />
open as well as under partial shade.weeding and mulching reduces the weed growth , 3-4<br />
weedings in a year are sufficient. Weeding during June- July and Oct- Nov and digging in<br />
aug- sep are practiced in Randathara in Kerala state.
