applied to the surface <strong>of</strong> this metal. <strong>The</strong> metal is<br />

obtained nowadays from imported tin or brass<br />

ware, but formerly a slip <strong>of</strong> hard wood was used,<br />

and, possibly, in some<br />

cases stone.<br />

<strong>The</strong> quiver for carrying<br />

the darts is a section<br />

<strong>of</strong> bamboo about four<br />

inches in diameter and<br />

ten inches in length,<br />

fitted with a cap <strong>of</strong> the<br />

same which fits over the<br />

shaved lip <strong>of</strong> the main<br />

piece (Fig. 44). A<br />

wooden hook lashed to<br />

the quiver enables it to<br />

be hung from the belt.<br />

<strong>The</strong> darts, mostly without<br />

piths, are wrapped<br />

in a squirrel skin and<br />

thrust tip downwards<br />

into the quiver. A small<br />

gourd tied to the quiver<br />

carries a supply <strong>of</strong> piths<br />

all ready to be placed on<br />

the darts.<br />

Pottery<br />

<strong>The</strong> importation <strong>of</strong><br />

earthenware and <strong>of</strong> cooking<br />

pots <strong>of</strong> brass and iron<br />

has now almost put an end to the native manufacture<br />

<strong>of</strong> pottery ;<br />

but in former times simple earthenware<br />

vessels for boiling rice were made by Kayans,<br />

Kenyahs, Ibans, and some <strong>of</strong> the Klemantans.<br />

Those who made no pots boiled their rice and sago
