One <strong>of</strong> these war-boats, manned by sixty or seventy<br />

paddlers, can maintain a pace about equal to that <strong>of</strong><br />

our University racing eights.^<br />

1 On one occasion on which a race between twenty-two <strong>of</strong> these war-boats<br />

was rowed at Marudi on the Baram river, we timed the winning-boat over<br />

the down-stream course <strong>of</strong> four and half miles. <strong>The</strong> time was twenty-two<br />

minutes thirteen seconds.
