of the two bow-men and the four next the stern.

One of these war-boats, manned by sixty or seventy
paddlers, can maintain a pace about equal to that of
our University racing eights.^
1 On one occasion on which a race between twenty-two of these war-boats
was rowed at Marudi on the Baram river, we timed the winning-boat over
the down-stream course of four and half miles. The time was twenty-two
minutes thirteen seconds.
