distinguished themselves<br />

in war maywear,<br />

instead <strong>of</strong> the<br />

teeth, pieces <strong>of</strong> similar<br />

shape carved from<br />

the solid beak <strong>of</strong> the<br />

helmeted hornbill.<br />

<strong>The</strong> youths who<br />

have not qualified<br />

themselves for these<br />

adornments, and<br />

warriors during<br />

mourning, usually<br />

wear a disc <strong>of</strong> wood<br />

orwax in their places<br />

<strong>The</strong> lobe <strong>of</strong>dhe<br />

ear is perforated and<br />

distended to a loop<br />

some two inches in<br />

length, in which a<br />

brass ring is worn.<br />

Just above this loop<br />

a small hole through<br />

the shell is usually<br />

made, and from this<br />

a small skein <strong>of</strong> beads<br />

depends. Similar ear<br />

ornaments are worn<br />
