1. Investigating Structure 53 Theoretical Considerations The Structure of 'Isaiah 67' Below is a chapter consisting of verses from the book of Isaiah. It was formed by picking numbers from a hat. The chapter was selected by choosing from numbers 1 to 66; the verse was selected from numbers 1 to 37. Where the number drawn from the hat exceeded the number of verses in a particular chapter, the latter number was subtracted from the former (more than once, if necessary) so that an existing reference was obtained. There may well be objections to this procedure from the point of view that it is not a 'purely random' number. From our point of view this is not significant: we simply need to know that the chapter has not been put together with any consistent principle of arrangement. The chapter formed in this way was then examined to see if the sort of criteria used to establish structure in current studies could be used to argue for some sort of order in a literary unit that we know has no planned structure. The following 'chapter' was obtained: 1 = 13.4 2 = 53.9 3 = 58.3 4 = 37.3 5 = 18.3 6 = 28.5 7 = 29.14 8 = 52.9 9 = 39.8 10 = 29.2 11 = 1.3 12 = 28.13 13 = 15.6 14 = 52.11 15 = 12.5 16 = 66.16 17 = 6.4 18 = 64.4 19 = 17.14 20 = 4.1 3TDU nion onm ]ion Vip 1 D'BOK3 D"U rTD'jQD |TReJ *7Tp nnnbo K3* npan niaa* nw vnon TttfirnKi rap D'JUtf-rnK pi 2 van nma #b"\ nfew onrrK 1 ? ba inn vfy\ IOBEU irjj? rnn vh^ MBX nn 1 ? 3 itoan DD'nsy-bDi farnirann D^D^ DVI ]n nroim m^-ov irrpm -IQK ro V^K iinm 4 -atfo-iiJ D']D na 'D ntn avn rrewi m 1 ? 1 ? |^K roi p« 'iDttfi "ran oaJ 1 ^ 5 wottfn iai2i uproi iton onn orKto 'ax mvtf? mK3^ nvr rrrp «nn ova 6 inr nuK} 1 ? m^an rrva^i

<strong>The</strong>oretical Considerations<br />

<strong>The</strong> Structure of 'Isaiah 67'<br />

Below is a chapter consisting of verses from the book of Isaiah. It was<br />

formed by picking numbers from a hat. <strong>The</strong> chapter was selected by<br />

choosing from numbers 1 to 66; the verse was selected from numbers<br />

1 to 37. Where the number drawn from the hat exceeded the number<br />

of verses in a particular chapter, the latter number was subtracted<br />

from the former (more than once, if necessary) so that an existing<br />

reference was obtained. <strong>The</strong>re may well be objections to this procedure<br />

from the point of view that it is not a 'purely random' number.<br />

From our point of view this is not significant: we simply need to know<br />

that the chapter has not been put together with any consistent principle<br />

of arrangement.<br />

<strong>The</strong> chapter formed in this way was then examined to see if the sort<br />

of criteria used to establish structure in current studies could be used<br />

to argue for some sort of order in a literary unit that we know has no<br />

planned structure.<br />

<strong>The</strong> following 'chapter' was obtained:<br />

1 = 13.4 2 = 53.9 3 = 58.3 4 = 37.3 5 = 18.3<br />

6 = 28.5 7 = 29.14 8 = 52.9 9 = 39.8 10 = 29.2<br />

11 = 1.3 12 = 28.13 13 = 15.6 14 = 52.11 15 = 12.5<br />
