intended his readers to s connection, he would probably have used
a stronger indicator. This would have been spotted by my method if:
(1) I had extended the search to include recognized word pairs; and
(2) the words uatf and mtf happened to be such a pair. 1 A similar situation
exists for no. 11:1 did not connect 'flee' in 2.10 (// O^D:) with
9.12 (although I examined and rejected a possible link with 14.5).
Several of Mason's suggestions are tentative (e.g. nos. 1, 5, 12, 18,
22), and are not, therefore, suitable for the purpose of this study.
The fact that rnuin CTCD (no. 3) occurs as a phrase elsewhere in the
Hebrew Bible reduces (but does not remove) its significance as a
marker of structure. This reminds us that, not only words, but phrases
must be evaluated in terms of their distinctiveness.
On the other hand, it is probable that some of the repeated words
which we have examined might be of interest to Mason if he ever publishes
a revised form of the thesis. The clearest example is probably
2.15, 8.8, 13.9. 2
Summary of Results
There have been no great surprises in this chapter. The indications
noticed in Chapter 3 are confirmed: there is clear evidence of a
unified editing of the whole of chs. 1-8, with a concern to emphasize
certain important themes. I might mention:
a. Yahweh's anger with 'the fathers' and the judgment that
followed.
b. Yahweh's anger now transferred to the nations (although
they started out in accordance with his intentions), and his
compassion for Judah and Jerusalem.
c. Yahweh's intention, therefore, to dwell in the midst of his
people in Jerusalem again, and to be their God.
d. The concern that people should know that Yahweh has sent a
messenger to them.
e. The provision of harmonious civil and religious leadership
authorized by Yahweh.
1. In fact these words do not seem to form a recognized word pair. The characteristic
pairing with 'answer' is 'call' or 'cry' (most frequently inp). But a~ip is also
frequently found with watf. There is room for further investigation here.
