294 Structure and the Book ofZechariah
15. Position and pastoral purpose afford another strong link with
Zechariah. 1-8, cf. 1.2-6, 16; 2.9, 14-16; 3.7; 6.15b; 7.8-13; 8.16-17,
21-22 (pp. 98-100).
On 10.3-12 + 11.1-3
16. Zech. 10.6 'affords a remarkable reversal of the judgment of
Zech. 7.13' (pp. 123-24).
17. Zech. 10.7 cf. 8.5 (children[/sons] rejoicing/playing) (p. 124).
18. Zech. 10.9 JDT either means 'scatter' here only, or should be
emended to mr. The latter might be supported by 2.4 ('horns scattered
Israel') and 7.9-14 (1*0) (pp. 127-28).
19. 'A continued link with the thought of proto-Zechariah is
apparent in the promise of divinely appointed leadership, the destruction
by the power of Yahweh of those who opposed his people,
perhaps the avenging horsemen who execute Yahweh's will, the joy of
the returning exiles extending even to their children, the fertility of
the land with its vineyards, the reversal of the "scattering" and the
picture of the restored community "walking" in the name of Yahweh
(v. 12, cf. 8.21)' (p. 131).
On 11.4-17
20. There is general similarity between this and the 'Night Visions',
including first person form, most marked with 6.9-14 (which is not
actually a 'night vision'). There is no need to accept Sasbo's suggestion
that Zechariah was the one who carried out the action recorded in
11.4-17 (pp. 138-39).
21. The prophet's view of the official cultus is in line with earlier
prophecy, and in particular, proto-Zechariah, for example 7.8-10 'on
which 11.4-5 might almost be a comment' (pp. 148-49).
22. Was some symbolic act behind throwing the thirty pieces of
silver into the smelting furnace (so LXX, xcove\)Tr|piov)? This suggestion,
though tentative, is supported by 13.7-9 and Ezek. 22.17-22, and
would be in line with Zechariah 3 and 5.1-4; cf. 6.9-14 (pp. 163-64).
On 13.7-9
23. 'n'DU, 13.7, 'by its rarity, is meant to carry special emphasis.
For elsewhere in the Old Testament it occurs only in the legal sections
of Leviticus'. It is used especially of the way Israelites should treat
each other and recalls chs. 7-8 (pp. 174-75).
