4. Connections Between Sections ofZechariah 1-14 293
On 9.9-10
9. An independent oracle but
its editorial placing here can hardly have been accidental. .. a general
resemblance to the pattern and emphases of proto-Zechariah may be
recalled.
In both, the promise of the new age, with the role of the Temple central
to the fulfilment, leads on to the thought of the agent of the rule of God,
and, in both, certain features of royalty are emphasised. Have these
emphases of proto-Zechariah influenced the arrangement of oracles here,
and, if so, does it mean that the promises of Zechariah concerning the
Temple and the leadership are being reinterpreted in a new situation and
their fulfilment announced as being at hand? (pp. 36-38).
10. Zech. 9.9; 2.14. Points of contact: the context of judgment
against the 'nations' which have plundered and oppressed his people;
the contrast of rejoicing to former servitude; many nations will join
themselves to Yahweh (cf. also Zeph. 3.14) (pp. 39-45; cf. also
pp. 59-60, 77).
On 9.11-17
11. Zech. 9.12; 2.10-13. Refers to Saeb0's espousal of R. Bach's
suggestion that 9.12 belongs to a literary type 'invitation to flight' 1
(P- 67).
12. Zech. 9.16; cf. references to stones and crowns in Zechariah 1-8.
The crowns may speak of the joint rule of high priest and 'civil'
governor in the restored community. 'Is it possible that in this verse
there is the thought that the promise of the stone and the crowns,
particularly in proto-Zechariah, is to be fulfilled in the life of the
community?' This would mean that 'the community are to become
what Joshua and Zerubbabel had been' (pp. 85-88).
On 10.1-2
13. Rain as a symbol of God's life-giving activity and presence, as
in many earlier prophecies, including Zech. 8.9-13 (p. 93).
14. Points to the moral to be drawn from history as Zech. 1.4
(p. 97).
1. Saeb0, 'Die deuterosacharjanischeFrage', p. 191; R. Bach, Die Aufforderungen
zur Flucht und zum Kampf in alttestamentlichen Prophetenspruch
(WMANT, 9; Neukirchen-Vluyn: Neukirchener Verlag, 1962), p. 19.
