4. Connections Between Sections ofZechariah 1-14 285
In 10.9 rrn is used to express blessing for those who have been
scattered: they will live, with their children. In 13.3 it is the false
prophet's own 'father and mother who bore him' that say, 'You shall
not live...'
Contacts with Zechariah 14
Here we find a number of words relating to the defeat of Yahweh's
enemies and the establishing of his supremacy: b'n is used of the
wealth taken away from Tyre/the nations; ~pn is used to deny a king
to Gaza, then to describe Jerusalem's lowly king. Chapter 14 contains
references to Yahweh as king over all the earth, and (twice) the king
whom the nations come to worship (vv. 9, 16-17), as well as the
apparently incidental references to King Uzziah and the 'king's wine
presses'. At least 14.11 mentions being inhabited as a sign of God's
blessing. Horses are mentioned as suffering a plague like the one
suffered by the nations who came against Jerusalem and then as having
bells inscribed 'holy to Yahweh'.
K!T is used of half the city going forth into exile, of Yahweh going
forth to battle on Jerusalem's behalf, and of living waters going forth
from Jerusalem. These are comparable to 9.14 'his arrow will go
forth' and 10.4 'every oppressor will go forth (i.e. depart)' or 'every
ruler will go forth'. 1
There are no distinctive contacts between 9.15-11.3 and ch. 14,
except for rrn, which represents a different usage.
Conclusions
Taking together our results from Chapter 3 and the present chapter
we seem to have the following situation.
Zech. 9.1-11.3 begins and ends with judgment for Judah's enemies.
It contains a hint of salvation for them also in 9.7. As far as Judah is
concerned, there will be salvation and peace. Bad leaders will be
removed and their king will come iXtfi] and p'~ns.
pp. 54-55, 88-90, 108-109), but without noting this correspondence, and by
working on different principles. In 12.1-14.21, 13.2-6 was left without a counterpart.
This unit, 'Suppression of idols', then seemed to match 10.2-3a, 'Presence of
idols'. I do not argue here for 10.2-3a as a separate unit.
