284 Structure and the Book ofZechariah
It does not seem possible to link the glory of the trees of Lebanon
(11.2-3) with the 'lordly price' of 11.13. We may also disregard the
'hairy mantle' of 13.4.
To sum up so far: I have not found any obvious linking of sections,
as in the case of the visions in Zechariah 1-6. Nor have I been able to
confirm the structural theories of Lamarche, Lacocque or Otzen. On
the other hand there does seem to be a coherence to the whole section
9.1-13.9, brought out by the presence of significant ideas expressed in
similar terms. It begins to look as if a connection between the humble
king, the shepherd(s) and the pierced one was really intended by the
person(s) responsible for the final form of Zechariah. This does not
mean that the editor of chs. 1-8 was the same as that of chs. 9-14, or
that the latter worked over the former. The impression is given of
two separate entities with a considerable amount in common having
been put together.
Contacts with 12.1-13.6
If I have been right in regarding 11.4-13.9 as a whole unit, and in
seeing an intended unity with 9.1-11.3, then we should look for ways
in which this is confirmed or undermined in 12.1-13.6. It appears that
there are further links: rO3 is used twice of Yahweh's judgment in
12.4 ('strike with panic/blindness'); the fire devours Judah's enemies
(12.6, as in 9.4, although the figure is different in detail); 1 there is
considerable stress upon the idea of 'inhabiting' in the descriptions of
blessing and judgment; rro is used of judgment of idols; 12.5 has
'God' with the personal suffix (12.8 does not fit obviously, but perhaps
it recalls Exod. 4.16 and Yahweh's great deliverance through Moses);
i?2J» is an important word used in the context of battle; the um and DID
make a clear connection with 9.9-10; D'to is used each time with
Yahweh as the subject in the context of making his people a particular
type of instrument for punishing their enemies (warrior's sword, proud
battle horse, cup of reeling, heavy stone, blazing pot/flaming torch);
Yahweh will shield (]r) them. I think we must ignore pR and ncnR.
Looking at the later section, we find nrn and iptz) in close proximity
in 10.2 and 13.2-3, referring to 'diviners' (D'oop) and the (presumably
false) prophet. 2
1. I resist the temptation to reinstate 033, 9.5; 12.10.
2. Lamarche connected these two sections, 10.2-3a and 13.2-6 (Zacharie 9-14,
