4. Connections Between Sections ofZechariah 1-14 265 central editorial section of ch. 4 with ch. 6, there may be some significance in the use of |n. It is repeated in 4.7, the cry that accompanies the setting up of ntftnn pKn, and is also the name substituted for Josiah in 6.14 (cf. v. 10).! There may even be a connection with 12.10. Other than these note the following. nri, 'by my/his Spirit' in 4.6; 7.12. The latter refers to 'the torah and the words that Yahweh... sent by his Spirit by the hand of the former prophets' (the latter phrase also occurs in 7.7). This suggests that the writer is conscious of the fact that Zechariah stands in the line of the earlier prophets, and that Yahweh's methods remain the same. The expression 'Lord of all the earth' forms a very strong link between the climax of this central section of the visions, and the last vision of the series. There are some contacts between 4.6-10 and 12.1 and 10, viz. 'Yahweh who founded the earth and forms the spirit of man' (12.1) and 'spirit of grace (and supplication)' (12.10), which probably indicates at least that the writer of ch. 12 knew the earlier section. 2 We may conclude that there is no other evidence of an attempt to link this vision plus its oracle with any other section in Zechariah 1- 14. Again the words and phrases most likely to be significant occur in the editorial section. Connections between Zechariah 5 and the Rest ofZechariah Occurrences in Occurrences in the Occurrences in Verse Word ch. 5 rest of 1.1-8.23 chs. 9-14 Vision 6: The Flying Scroll (5.1-4) 3 dfg 34s 8475( 4 n'3 4.##7,10,16 6.10; 7.3; 8.9, 9.8; 10.3,6 (2x); (11) 13 (2x), 15, 19 11.13; 12 (7x); 13.1,6; 14.2, 20, 21 1. An alternative explanation that has found some favour is that of A. Demsky, 'The Temple Steward Josiah ben Zephaniah', IEJ 31 (1981), pp. 100-102. He refers to the Akkadian lahhinu (and its Aramaic cognate |n*?) which is used of an official responsible for handling gold and silver in the temple or court. Quoted with approval in Petersen, Haggai and Zechariah, p. 278 n. 8. 2. Cf. Mason, Zechariah 9-14, pp. 202-206.

In 8.17 "ipttf nustf occurs in a group of four exhortations, delivered to the people who are restored to favour after the punishment of the exile. Obviously, this is an important part of the necessary purification that is to take place, but there does not seem to be a very strong attempt to link these sections of the book together. The actual form of the combination is different, and the associations are different (e.g. stealing is not mentioned in 8.16-17). rv3 occurs at the end of each of these two visions; in v. 4 it is given great emphasis. Perhaps there is a deliberate contrast made between the houses of the sinner and of 'wickedness' itself, and the house of Yahweh. 6.13 6.13; 7.7 (2x); 8.4, 20-21 6.5, 8; 7.12 8.23 6.5; 8.12 6.12, 13, 15; 8.9 6.8 9.1, 8; 11.12, 17 (2x); 12.4; 14.12 11.9; 12 (5x); 14.2 9.5-6; 10.6; 11.6; 12 (5x); 13.1; 14.10, 11 (2x) 9.15, 16; 12.3 11.13.##4,15 12.1, 10; 13.2 12.1 9.3
