latter: 'one stone', 'one woman', 'one day' (?), 'Yahweh one
and his name one' (3.9; 5.7; 14.7, 9). The other references
do not seem to be significant: 'one on the right.. .left', 'one
to one...' and so on.
Checking back to the previous sections we note that there are few
parallels apart from the phrase 'choose Jerusalem' noted in the section
above. With ch. 1 we find: mp (used differently), "pi and untf (all
1.4); 'my servant(s)' (1.6; 3.8); "intf is only used in the expression
'standing among the myrtle trees'. It is appropriate that as the fathers
previously followed their own 'evil ways', the command to 'walk in
my ways' is now laid upon Joshua the people's representative.
Parallels with ch. 2 are limited to p>, tfK.
Our conclusions must necessarily be somewhat negative here. There
is little evidence that the writer who was responsible for ch. 3 sought
to do more than to link it with ch. 4 as the central part of the series of
visions, and to link it with the final appendage to the visions.
This conclusion is consonant with the view that 3.1-7 + 8-10 has more
affinity with the work of the redactor than the visionary, especially
when we add to the observations above the different introductory
formula and the use of the expression mrr IK^D. However, the latter
expression does occur in 1.11-12, and the last verse of the final vision
suggests that it is mrv "[K^n who is in mind. The question is: under what
circumstances does a different expression indicate a different hand? 1
The Connection between Zechariah 3-4 and 6.9-15
We have noted that there are many words common to Zech. 3 and
6.11-15. This connection has been obvious to commentators because
both passages have to do with Joshua the high priest. Nevertheless it is
rare to find a commentary with a concern to show the purpose of the
positioning of the two passages, or the more than usual number of
repeated words. 2 We may say immediately that both units occur in key
