252 Structure and the Book ofZechariah
Although there is some oversimplification, my own investigation supports
these general conclusions.
Schottler's traditio-historical study1 agrees with this pattern in the
final eight-vision cycle, but he has two additional patterns on the way
to this:
Stage 1: V5 = middle point; V3 // V7
Stage 2: V4 = middle point; V2 // V7, and V3 // V5
Stage 3: V4 + V5 = middle point; V2 // V7, and V3 // V6
This seems to prove that, if one is flexible enough, one can discern
correspondences between all sorts of different units.
Baldwin 2 has V2 // V6, and V3 // V7, and brackets VV2-3 and
VV6-7 together giving an overall chiastic structure:
VI a A patrol of the whole earth reports
V2 b The nations meet retribution
V3 bl Jerusalem has a divine protector
V4 c The high priest reinstated
V5 cl Divine resources for high priest and prince
V6 b2 Evil meets retribution
V7 b3 Jerusalem is purified
V8 al God's patrols compass the earth
We have found confirmation of the bracketing of VV2-3, 6-7, but
must regard the labelling as suspect. For example, we noted that
'Jerusalem' does not occur in V7, but does occur in V2. In VV6-7 it is
'the (whole) land' that is in view (5.3, 6; cf. v. 11). Stuhlmueller 3
reproduces a diagram similar to Baldwin's but thinks the suggestion
that VV2-3 parallel VV6-7 'remains problematical'.
C. Jeremias 4 notes that:
1. V2 and V7 (using my notation: he excludes V4 from the
original cycle) have a multiple application of the
Grundschema. VV2, 5, 7 end with the meaning of the vision.
The other visions do not.
2. VV1, 3, 6 and 8 end with divine speech.
