3. The Structure of Individual Sections of Zechariah 223
(15, 133), n« (6, 48), ^ (12, 42), •?», K 1 ?, X nete, rrn (24, 67), ]n.
3~ip, vv. 1, 3, is interesting. In the first instance it means 'in your
midst' from root II; v. 3 contains a noun from root I meaning
'battle'. A pun of some sort might be intended but the difference in
pronunciation makes this unlikely. However the word is rare (only
12.1 otherwise in Zechariah: 'the spirit of man within him') and we
should plot it.
*p» occurs in vv. 2, 14; otherwise only in 12.3.
"•la (6, 17) is common but must be retained as expressing one of the
major concerns of the prophet. We should also consider it along with
DD, vv. 2, 18.
DbttfTV is similar. It often occurs with 'Judah' and is sometimes
referred to by another expression, e.g. Tun, vv. 3, 10.
on 1 ? (4, 9) must be retained.
rrn (3, 31) occurs in its absolute plural form in v. 2, which may be
ignored, and in the expression 'house of Yahweh' in vv. 20-21, which
is surprisingly rare in Zechariah 9-14. ! We shall plot it.
K^ (3, 24) has previously proved to be an important word and must
be retained.
'2m only occurs in this chapter: vv. 2, 4 (3x), 8 (2x); so we must
retain it.
IDS + *?a~i. These occur together in vv. 4 and 12. The latter does not
occur elsewhere in Zechariah, and this is obviously one of the likeliest
phrases to have a structuring function. The combination, however, is
different: vban nom and v^n by nau.
in occurs five times in vv. 4-5, once in 4.7, three times in 6.1 and
twice in 8.3. If it is significant at all for our purposes it will be for a
larger section of the book. See m below.
m occurs twice in v. 4 together with "in in the expression 'Mount
of Olives'. We may probably ignore it here. Elsewhere in Zechariah it
occurs in the vision of the lampstand and the olive trees (4.3, 11-12).
The next group contains words sufficiently rare and/or distinctive
for us to plot them: Dip (2, 2), D' (3, 7), toa (3, 3), DJ3 (2, 3; otherwise
7.7), oi] (3, 5), -pa (5, 9; vv. 5, 9-10, 16-17), rmrr (3, 22), ehp (3,
6), TIK (2, 2), in* (3, 13), Til) (2, 2); we ignore bia (2, 13), and n»d
(2, 5).
1. 'My house' occurs in Zech. 9.8; in Zech. 1-8 the expression occurs only in
1.16; 3.7; 3.9; 7.3.
