3. The Structure of Individual Sections of Zechariah 221
There is greater difficulty when 12.10-13.1 is compared with
13.7-9, 'pierced' and 'struck'. The 'pierced' of 13.3 is ignored and the
verse included in vv. 2-6 under the title 'idols and false prophets'.
The two instances of roj in 12.4 are also excluded from consideration.
Zech. 13.2-6 is given as follows (p. 89; I have supplied a, b, c):
2 A And it will happen on that day
a Rejection of idols. .. no more mentioned [actually 'remembered']
b Suppression of false prophets
3 c If anyone prophesies and speaks falsely. .. pierced
4-6 A' And it will happen on that day
c If prophesy. .. shame. No more tell lies,
b Suppression of false prophets
a Not mention idols any more
This is not satisfactory for the following reasons.
1. Aab represent two parallel statements in v. 2. The internal
parallel is lost in Lamarche's plan. It is actually:
p«n |n D'3*J?n rnntf n« rr-OK
TIJJ ror K^I
rtKnon nn nKi D'R'DJ PR on
pun |n -V3im
It seems highly artificial to divide this verse so as to make it balance a
rather longer passage at the end of the section.
2. The label in A'a is misleading. 'Idols' are not mentioned, and it is
doubtful whether this is the main concern of v. 6.
3. The strong repetition of v. 3 is missed: 'his father 1 and his
mother who bore him', which is a heavy phrase (worthy of P!). It is
actually used to frame the important word ipi, which Lamarche
ignores. This is the most serious oversight of all, since it spoils his
whole theory of the structure of at least Zechariah 12-14. For the
structure of v. 3, see above.
4. Lamarche notes that the strongest formula occurs in v. 4, and is
right therefore to make the main break between vv. 3 and 4. He
does not note the similarity, however, between iK23ro and intom 2
1. The change from van to vrn» is slightly against this suggestion, but I think
the similarity is still too strong to be missed.
2. The latter is usually reckoned to be the result of confusion between lamedhaleph
and lamedh-he forms, and emended to read as in v. 3 (Saeb0, 'Die
