220 Structure and the Book ofZechariah
1 Introduction
2 a Here is what I will make (D'to) Assault of all
Jerusalem nations repulsed
3 a' And on that day I will make (D'to) Assault of all
Jerusalem nations repulsed
4-5 b On that day: battle Example of Jerusalem
encourages Judah
6 b' On that day: battle Judah, in the hands of
Yahweh, saves Jerusalem
7 c Yahweh will save Judah in the first place
8 c' On that day Yahweh protects and exalts. .. David and
. .. Jerusalem
on that day. ..
9 Conclusion: And on that day Destruction of all nations
that besieged Jerusalem
In vv. 2-3 D'to is distinctive and worthy of note, but why is D'U "?3
(vv. 4, 9) not properly accounted for, nor the slightly varying
phrases ([3'3D] D'n^n *?3)? The formula is only taken note of where it
is convenient to do so. It occurs, for example, in v. 9 but not v. 10.
Lamarche's analysis is not without plausibility: it does trace three
phases in the narrative. However, they are neither so distinct nor so
exact as he suggests.
Lamarche's plan for 12.10-13.1 is: 1
12. lOa a Conversion and return to Yahweh of the house of David
and the inhabitants of Jerusalem
v. lOb b Mourning
vv. 11-14 b' On that day mourning
13.1 a' On that day conversion and purification of the house
of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem
Similar remarks may be made. 'Conversion' might pass as a description
of what is described in 12.10a and/or 13.1, but it is not exact, nor
completely accurate. It does, however, seem likely that this section is
at least a subdivision of 12.1-13.6 which the author/editor himself had
in mind.
