the second is also covenantal and refers to the 'my-people-their-God'
motif which occurs at important points in Proto-Zechariah. It seems
likely that both 11.10 and 13.9 are climax points in the section(s).
Kin is an insignificant word, but seems to be used for special emphasis
in this context. In 11.11 we find two occurrences including a nonstandard
use of Kinn D'3: 'It was broken on that day'. Frequent use of
the expression 'and on that day' to denote a future day of fulfilment
would lend power to its use here. RTF mrr -QI "O.. .urn adds further
weight and reminds us of the phrase 'you shall know that Yahweh has
sent me...' in Zechariah 1-8. In 13.9 the use is different from that in
11.11, but emphatic nevertheless. It is uncertain whether any resonance
is intended between the two uses. We should probably plot it.
•pi), 11.12. 'If it is good in your eyes' is a very ordinary expression,
but, in view of the word's importance elsewhere, we should keep it. In
11.17 there is apparently unnecessary repetition of irn' p>. Note also
12.4, 'I will open my eyes' (for judgment) and 'strike every horse of
the peoples with blindness'. This may, of course indicate that 11.12
and 17 do not correspond with each other or that we need to include
12.1-13.6 together with the present passages.
"Dto only occurs in v. 12 (twice) and cannot be used as a marker
word.
cps D'tf^itf occurs only in connection with the receiving and
throwing away of the shepherd's wage. It is interesting that in 13.9
rvtf'ptfn will be burned in the fire and refined as *]OD is refined. Some
resonance may be intended here.
Most of the other words simply occur together in a single verse:
•IJJRYI *7K •p'ptfn occurs outside "ip' (noun and verb) in v. 13. We
could claim this to be a regular pattern:
a + b thirty pieces silver (IF). .. throw them to the potter
cc lordly price. .. priced by them
a + b took thirty pieces silver. .. threw them. .. to the potter
There is no doubt that the pattern is actually there, but it is doubtful
whether it is intentional or significant. Any time a narrator describes a
command to do something, and the carrying out of the command, this
to Jewish colonies scattered among the nations (Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi,
p. 184). S.R. Driver's suggestion is more convincing: 'that "the covenant" which h
had (metaphorically) made with the nations that they should not molest Israel was
now annulled' (The Minor Prophets, p. 257).
