194 Structure and the Book ofZechariah Assuming that these observations are reliable we may conclude that the overall structure of the passage is something like this: 9.1-8 Main connections 10.5(-6), 11; 11.1 linked (by ntci, rro, me?) with: 9.9-10 Main connections 10.3-5 + 6? + 7 linked (by )i% DnsR, rap) with: 9.13 (+ 16? I?0') Main connections 10.3-5 + 6? + 7 (7-9, 10) We have already seen that 9.1 -8 contains very few words repeated within it, yet there are quite a number of connections with following sections. There are many obscurities, but the general theme of the section was clear: Israel's traditional enemies are to be judged—and saved. This accords with 9.9-10, which follows: Israel's saved and righteous king will come, there will be peace, and his reign will extend over the whole world. The scene changes to the time before this peace is established, and more detail is given about the way victory will come. Verses 13 and 16 link in with what has gone before, vv. 11-12, 14-15 and 17 have few links. There is room for speculation about editorial work here, but the section as a whole holds together well enough. Zech. 10.1-2 focus on the present situation, and a new feature (but one related to 9.9-10) appears: a concern with the leaders of the community. 1 As we saw above the only significant verbal link with a remote verse here was the word 'shepherd' (10.2.#21, 3.#2; 11.3.#3). This suggests that 10.1-2 is transitional and leads to an important focus upon the question of leadership in 10.2b-4. This confirms the connection between 9.9-10 and vv. 3-5 which has been noted, and gives it point. Verses 3-5 move on to deal with the future punishment of Israel's enemies and her own blessing (as in 9.[9]11-17, where, however, the element of blessing was more muted). Verses 1-5 form a self-contained section in some sense, and it is plausible to speak of an inclusio formed by TTQ;I for vv. 6-12. However, it would be misleading to try to represent this by a, b, a 1 and so on, in the conventional way, since we have noted so many links outside the section, which do not form regular patterns either in series or chiastically. Zech. 11.1-3 is a closely structured unit, yet it manages to link up 1. Lamarche's plan does not acknowledge the correspondence between 10.2-3a and any of the 'shepherd sections' of Zech. 9-14.
