192 Structure and the Book ofZechariah
Repeated Words in Zechariah 9.1-11.3
Words that are certainly unimportant for structure or that only occur
within the individual sections 9.1-8, 9-10, 11-17, 10.1-12 or 11.1-3,
have been omitted from the table (figure 12). Several features stand
out from this table.
1. The links between different sections are formed by a small
number of verses, viz. 9.1-8 with 10.5 and 11; 9.9-10, 13
with 10.3-7 (as noticed in our discussion of the relevant
sections above).
2. The three similar-sounding verbs, 03% 30' and 310, seem to
connect with each other. 03' is used only of judgment on
Israel's enemies (Ekron, horse-riders, depths of the Nile); 30'
is used to describe blessing (denied and modified in 9.5, 6
respectively), and 310 is similar to this. Thus 'returning' and
'dwelling' are important concepts in Zechariah. 1
3. Zech. 9.9-13 is bound together in a number of ways: the
focus on Zion/Jerusalem/Ephraim; n0p which links also with
10.3-5, asdoD'to and "1133. Zech. 9.11 plays no part in making
these connections; v. 12 only connects with 8.5 and 10.9-10,
by means of the verb 310.
4. Zech. 9.13 is also linked with 10.7, by means of D'~iSK, 'sons'
(also 10.9), and TO:.
5. Zech. 9.9 also has links with 10.6-7 in ^a and i?0' (although
we should probably ignore D32Ki/ui?'/»3»).
6. In 9.4 and 11.1 we find *?DR + 0K (we should probably ignore
the obscure reference 'they shall eat' in 9.15).
7. This leaves few words unaccounted for: 'HK and no ('his
people', 'the nations') should probably be ignored; 0T ('dispossess',
'new wine') should certainly be ignored. The most
significant words must be D'n*?« and i>0'. On examination of
their contexts, we find a strong connection between 9.16 and
10.6 ('Yahweh their God' and 'save [Israel]').
1. Cf. the discussion of 'Jerusalem as inhabited', p. 103; cf. also 1.11 which
ends with the striking phrase nopttfi rattf'. As the message proceeds there is a change
from the nations 'dwelling (securely)' to Judah and Jerusalem enjoying this
privilege.
