182 Structure and the Book ofZechariah
that this is the intended structure of the editor, for example, by
showing that this is a more satisfactory scheme than its possible rivals.
Even if 'battle' and 'intervention of Yahweh' are the right way of
describing the sections so named, it is by no means clear that the
central pattern, xxyy yx'yx", is a regular or pleasing structure. We
noted above that the strongest verbal correspondences between vv. 13
and 16 are with vv. 10 and 9 respectively, but these are just outside
Lamarche's section.
The same method is used by Lamarche throughout his book, and
there seems little point in making the same criticisms for each section.
We shall, therefore, confine further criticism to points that are
specific to the section in question.
Lacocque's scheme is slightly different here. He takes vv. 11-17
together and sets out the following pattern:
a lla blood alliance a' 15 blood banquet
b lib out of the pit b 1 16a divine salvation
c 12a the stronghold c' 16b God's field
d 12b promise of prosperity d' 17 prosperity
Verses 13-14 are an incise:
a Judah (south)
b Ephraim (north)
1 Zion (east)
2 Yavan (west)
b' God's lightning (north)
a 1 God comes from Teman (south)
This is surely fanciful. There are no words in common between any
two parallel sections; 'blood' in v. 15 comes from the LXX; v. 15a is
four times as long as v. lla; the word 'prisoners' occurs in both lib
and 12a but this is ignored; D3 at the beginning of vv. 11 and 12b,
which Lamarche made use of, is ignored; there is no warrant for
taking 'Zion' to represent the east; lightning is apparently associated
with the north by appeal to the god of thunder at Ugarit. 1
There seems to be no way of justifying this plan. Lacocque does not
argue his case.
