p», vv. 15-16. Unfortunately 9.15 is obscure, but the meaning of<br />

J^p-'aaK is 'slingstones'. It is possible that there is an intended contrast<br />

in v. 16 (especially since the same construction is used: 33K). <strong>The</strong>y<br />

will tread down slingstones; they will be stones in a crown. 1<br />

na, v. 17.##2,4, may be ignored.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Structure of Zechariah 9.9-10 and 11-17<br />

<strong>The</strong> results for this section are quite meagre. Repeating words in<br />

vv. 9-10, D^tfw, na, aai, n-o and is, do not yield any obvious<br />

pattern. In the case of vv. 11-17, despite the appearance in the list of<br />

»"?D and p«, nothing can be proved from this collection.<br />

If we consider vv. 9-17 together, the words that stand out are 'save'<br />

in vv. 9 and 16, and both 'bow' and 'Ephraim' in vv. 10 and 13. This<br />

could be significant, since the movement of this section is:<br />

9-10 Promise of peace<br />

11-12 ?Continues the promi se 2<br />

13-16 How the peace will come about: victory in battle<br />

Any scheme that asks to be taken seriously must account for these<br />

corresponding words.<br />

We have again found contact with the rest of the chapter and with<br />

ch. 10 in particular. This confirms the decision above (in the<br />

summary of results for 9.1-8) that 9.1-11.3 should be considered as a<br />

whole.<br />

making Ephraim the quiver and not the arrow. This seems to demand too logical an<br />

approach of the poet. It seems better to accept Rudolph's explanation of MT: 'I have<br />

bent Judah as my bow; I have filled (it) with Ephraim'.<br />

1. Verse 15 is notoriously difficult to translate. <strong>The</strong> most commonly accepted<br />

emendation is o[n]l instead of ion (as LXX; 'they shall drink their blood [like<br />

wine]. ..', not 'they shall drink, they shall be boisterous'). We should keep MT,<br />

which Baldwin (Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, pp. 169-70) makes a good attempt to<br />

explain.<br />

2. nK-ffl casus pendens links the verse with v. 9 (cf. I. Willi-Plein, Prophetic<br />

am Ende: Untersuchungen zu Sacharja 9-14 [BBB, 42; Bonn: Peter Hanstein,<br />

1974], p. 9; G. Gaide, Jerusalem, void ton roi: Commentaire de Zacharie 9-14<br />

[LectioDivina, 49; Paris: Cerf, 1968], p. 73). Some older commentators (e.g. Sellin)<br />

regarded vv. 9-10 as an insertion, but the connection of vv. 11-12 with v. 8 is difficult.<br />

Sellin referred the 'blood of the covenant' (v. 11) to the bloody sacrifices of<br />

v. 7a, omitting v. 8 as a gloss (Das Zwolfprophetenbuch [Leipzig: Deichert, 1922],<br />

pp. 495,499-501). This over-confident adjustment of the text need not be accepted.
