These, however, must be investigated more fully if we are not to fall
into the trap of making arbitrary selections from possibly significant
words.
Summary
There are few words that occur twice or more in 9.1-8. Moreover,
most of the potentially significant words have contacts only outside
this section. Within it we have discovered only: mrr, DJ, "O, pi> (with
textual problems), is (adjacent words), IRQ, nm, atf' (adjacent
words), 13J> (two words intervening), apart from the Philistine
references. There are grounds, therefore, for the following assertions:
1. Verses 5-7 are bound together by a strange inclusio of
'Ekron' and 'Ekron as part of a chiasmus'.
2. nm might form an inclusio for vv. 5-8, but the word is not
very distinctive. Perhaps the fact that 'eye' may also be used
to form an inclusio strengthens the claim of the word 'see'.
3. ]'33 might form an inclusio for vv. lb-8, but v. Ib is dubious
and not really in the right place. 2
4. I have noted particular connections between 9.1-8 and 10.10-
12, and these suggest that we should consider the larger unit
more fully. In fact I shall treat 9.1-11.3 together since most
commentators continue to this point before making a
division. 3
Before doing that we shall examine the smaller units that make up
this section, viz. 9.9-10, 9.11-17 and 10.1-11.3. If we find that they
do have an integrity of their own, we shall be inclined to conclude that
9.1-8 is, after all, a self-contained unit. If however, we discover links
mainly outside the separate units, we shall have confirmed the tentative
conclusions reached in this section.
