8.12, 17, but there seems to be no arguable connection between its use
in these two references.
DS. We have noted the phrase 'remnant of the people'. In the middle
of these references the word is used twice in a favourable sense ODJJ
and DD 1 ? **? vn) in 8.7-8. There is a contrast between the stern address
to 'all the people of the land' in 7.5 and the promise to '(many)
peoples' in 8.20, 22. The word is used, therefore, in accordance with
the movement of the chapter. The people of the land have not acted as
God's people; nevertheless the remnant are to be his people again in
Jerusalem and many others are to be brought in.
pK. The theme of land is set out in the address to 'all the people of
the land', 7.5. Whereas the pleasant land (man pK) was made
desolate (nacft. ..noeJ] p»n) 7.14, Yahweh will bring his people
rnrn pwa and etatfn tonn p»n, 8.7, and the land will (again) give its
increase, 8.12.
'D, in 7.5-6, means 'when'. Otherwise it is used in the sense of
'because' (or possibly 'if') (8.6) or 'for' (8.10, 12, 14, 17). It seems
that we can ignore it.
Dix and Jatf must obviously be kept, as noted above.
^R, although not distinctive in itself, draws attention to itself by its
emphatic use, occurring three times at the end of a phrase, and once,
in the important covenant promise, at the beginning.

describing the former time (7.4-7, 8-14) and the new situation that is
coming about (8.1-17). There does not seem to be any obvious
connection between the first three occurrences and the last.
