In the next chapter we shall consider briefly connections between the
major sections of Zechariah. However, it is convenient to discuss the
most obvious one here, namely the correspondence between the first
vision and this one.
Verse 1 is full of words that have been used in previous visions: ntfto;
mm ntriKi Wi) KtoKl; imsr; in (3x). The impression given is of a culmination
of what has gone before. The four chariots recall the four horses
of the first vision (note also the similarity between miDio and DDT in
1.8). The fact that we have noted an apparent awareness of inclusio
and chiasmus in the editor of Zechariah strengthens this impression.
In vv. 2-3 the colours are specified, as is the case in ch. 1, but the
actual colours are different:
Ch. 1 red, red, sorrel(?) (p~ifo), white
Ch. 6 red, black, white, dappled grey(?) (D-TQ [D'HOR?])
This is very puzzling, and I do not know of a convincing explanation
for this variation (cf. the odd changes of name in 6.10, 14, where Heldai
and Josiah are replaced by n^n and |n respectively [see below]). 1
'The angel who talked with me' (v. 4) occurs in 1.9, 14; 2.2, 7; 4.1,
4, 5; 5.5, 10. 'What are these my lord?': 1.9 and 4.4 only. We may
also note the phrase 'and I (etc.) answered' (ma), 1.10, 11, 12, 13.
a^nn (v. 5) is used only here in Zechariah. One wonders why the
writer does not use "ina, which occurs in 1.8, 10 and 11, as well as six
times in Zechariah 3, and also in 4.14. No certain answer can be
given. It does form a nice contrast with the hithpael of l^n.
f^nnn (v. 7) occurs as mentioned above, three times in 6.7. It is
found also in 1.10-11 (The only other occurrence in Zechariah is at
10.12).
