128 Structure and the Book of Zechariah There may be some similarity intended between nstf and na'K The next words do not seem to be significant: "IDR and rra», and we shall ignore them. Kir is a common word in Zechariah; it is normally used of the angels but here the usage seems to be more significant, both in vv. 1-4 and 5-11. 'The curse that goes forth over the face of the whole land' is obviously related to 'This is the ephah that goes forth... this is their eye (?) in all the earth', however the strange expression, Dri?, might be understood or emended. n:a only occurs here in Zechariah. Why is this word chosen? And why should it be linked with him who swears (falsely)? 1 The phrase np3 rms run [participle]."! *?D is unusual, but occurs twice only, close together, in v. 3. It may be repeated for emphasis, but is unlikely to have any structuring function, np] occurs nowhere else in Zechariah. mtf] occurs only here. We may ask whether it is in any way related to the 'sevens' and 'seventys' that abound? Lastly n'3 is found three times (all v. 4). Is there an intended contrast between the house of the evildoer and the house of the LORD? Note that this occurs in the phrase: 'the house of him who swears by my name. ..to falsehood!' The punchword comes as a surprise: the sentence cannot be understood or guessed without this. This small unit therefore has two clear parts: Vision (vv. 1-2) Interpretation (vv. 3-4) Within these sections there is a certain emphasis (by repetition) on the main elements: Vision: Flying scroll Interpretation: Goes forth, (house of) thief and he who swears (falsely), be purged (npj) In addition there are connections with other sections: 'length and breadth' (with vision 3) 'in the midst' (with visions 3 and 7) 1. Baldwin interprets it to represent actions with a human and divine reference: 'He who wrongs his neighbour and he who disgraces God', Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, p. 127.
