100 Structure and the Book ofZechariah
which has some connection with the vision itself. Nevertheless,
v. 9 forms a fitting ending, and v. 10 starts a new section with the
thrice repeated Tt (also found in v. II). 1 Verbal connections between
vv. 5-9 and 10-17 are very few: words 15-16 and 23-27. The number
of repeated words is not great, nor are the words particularly
distinctive. We may ignore "IDK, HDD 2 and"?«. Tin, which occurs as
rnn "^n and lia 1 ?, may also be ignored, run, vv. 5-6 only. This is an
important word in describing Zechariah's visions—both the outward
appearance to the prophet (v. 5 and most references) and something
further within the vision. This may be of two kinds:
1. One of the characters goes to see something (2.6).
2. The prophet is made to see (hiphil) the significance of a
vision or a particular feature (1.9; 2.3).
ntn (3.4; 6.8) in the sense of nan, will be considered below. 4.10a
refers to those who despise the day of small things; they will see that
which the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel signifies. The word is
important also in 9.5, 8, 14 and 10.7 (not elsewhere). However, it
does not seem to have any structuring function in 2.5ff.
D^tfrr (only) occurs in vv. 6 and 8; ]vs occurs in vv. 11 and 14. 3
"]Kba, ~m and Kir are closely connected together. Two different
angels are involved, but each one 'goes forth' (Hist'). One (presumably
the 'other angel') says, presumably to the angel '"? "QiTi, 'Run and
speak ("la!) to this young man...'—presumably the man with the
measuring line. The purpose of this may be to enhance the message
that comes as the climax of this section, by delaying it. The increase in
the number of angels involved may also serve this function. 4 The
words do not help to structure the unit as a whole.
•pn occurs in two pairs: roira vv. 8-9, and "pim vv. 14-15. See
below.
1. See Chapter 2 above.
2. The exact significance of this may not be clear, but there is no problem about
the meaning of 2.7.
3. It is appropriate that 'Jerusalem' is used of the physical city, and 'Zion' when
the concept of God's people is prominent. However, we cannot put too much weight
on this, since 'choose Jerusalem' occurs in v. 16. The same applies to the idea that
this terminology separates original author and editor.
4. The only other suggestion I have found is that it is to enhance the authority of
the message.
