Spices are defense compounds turned from weapons to pleasure Spices are plant-derived combinations of substances that in their pure form and concentration are potent insect and herbivore repellents: Chew on a leaf of bay or oregano, a clove or a peppercorn and even a vanilla fruit and you will realize it. Humans have two options insects do not have! 1.Dilute the repellants (toxicity is matter of concentration; Paracelsus) 2.Mix with ingredients that neutralize their repellent action. Aromatic volatiles will repel without contact (superior) while others like mustard oils (cabbages), sulfur compounds of Allium and others activate only after the herbivore has bitten.
