If it were possible to exhaust the centrifugal effect <strong>of</strong> the<br />

icecap <strong>by</strong> the absorption <strong>of</strong> energy in a local deformation <strong>of</strong><br />

the crust, the matter might wear a different aspect. But we<br />

are to remember that, if the yielding <strong>of</strong> the crust or its dis-<br />

placement as a whole allows the displacement <strong>of</strong> the ice mass<br />

farther from the axis <strong>of</strong> rotation, the centrifugal effect is<br />

there<strong>by</strong> multiplied. In these circumstances the centrifugal<br />

momentum cannot be absorbed locally, but must be trans-<br />

mitted to the entire crustal shell <strong>of</strong> the earth.<br />

5. <strong>The</strong> Calculations<br />

<strong>The</strong> following are the calculations <strong>of</strong> the centrifugal effect<br />

<strong>of</strong> the present Antarctic icecap, and <strong>of</strong> the resulting bursting<br />

stress on the crust, as worked out <strong>by</strong> Campbell. <strong>The</strong> phraseology<br />

is in part that <strong>of</strong> Dr. John M. Frankland, <strong>of</strong> the Federal<br />

Bureau <strong>of</strong> Standards, who was kind enough to review these<br />

calculations.<br />

a. Calculation <strong>of</strong> the Centrifugal Effect <strong>of</strong> the Rotation <strong>of</strong><br />

the Antarctic Icecap:<br />

Assume isostatic adjustment o, center <strong>of</strong> gravity <strong>of</strong> the ice-<br />

cap 345 miles from the polar axis, and volume <strong>of</strong> the ice<br />

equal to 6,000,000 cubic miles.<br />
