lower left-hand drawing <strong>of</strong> Figure XIV. <strong>The</strong> drawing shows,<br />

in black, two wedge-shaped cross sections representing the<br />

earth's equatorial bulge, or that part <strong>of</strong> it underlying the<br />

areas <strong>of</strong> the crust moving equatorward in the displacement.<br />

Half <strong>of</strong> the bulge is, in fact, involved; the other half under-<br />

lies the areas <strong>of</strong> the crust being simultaneously displaced<br />

poleward, but these do not affect the point at issue.<br />

<strong>The</strong> reader will note that the equatorial bulge <strong>of</strong> the earth<br />

is represented in this drawing as lying underneath the crust,<br />

so that the crust is not a part <strong>of</strong> it. This is a new way <strong>of</strong> visu-<br />

alizing the bulge, introduced <strong>by</strong> Campbell, and justified <strong>by</strong><br />

him on the ground that since the earth's crust is <strong>of</strong> the same<br />

general thickness all over the earth regardless <strong>of</strong> latitude<br />

(even though it may be <strong>of</strong> differing thicknesses from place to<br />
