In Figs. V and VI the artist imaginatively suggests some consequences <strong>of</strong><br />

a displacement <strong>of</strong> the crust. On this page we see a cross section <strong>of</strong> the<br />

earth before the movement, with the eccentric icecap above the equilibrium<br />

surface <strong>of</strong> the earth. On page 155 we see a cross section <strong>of</strong> the earth<br />

after a displacement through about 30 degrees <strong>of</strong> latitude. <strong>The</strong> drawings<br />

are not to scale. It has been necessary, for purposes <strong>of</strong> illustration, to<br />

exaggerate the oblateness <strong>of</strong> the earth, the depths <strong>of</strong> the oceans, and<br />

the thickness <strong>of</strong> the crust several hundred times. <strong>The</strong> drawings illustrate:<br />

(i) <strong>The</strong> subsidence <strong>of</strong> the crust in areas displaced toward the equator,<br />

relatively to sea level, and its uplift in areas moved poleward. (2) <strong>The</strong>
