Northview High School Honors the Victims
of 9/11 with Touching Memorial

SEPTEMBER 2012
Northview High School in Johns Creek, a northern suburb of
Atlanta, honored the 2,977 victims of 9/11 with a moving, nonpolitical
flag display. The memorial was installed the week of September 10th and is
sponsored by the student council. Close to 40 students and helpers installed the
American flags, which were on display at Northview High School until Friday
September 14th.
Many students worked tirelessly
to install the impressive display
and said…” It’s a day that we will
never forget. This is why we did
the memorial – to never forget the
people who died on 9/11.”
The JROTC organization at
Northview High School held a flag
ceremony on 9/11 with the playing
of "Taps," a speech and a moment
of silence to honor the victims of
9/11, America’s darkest day.
Last year’s student council raised money to purchase the flags by holding a
sponsorship program and participating in Arts on the Creek, a Johns Creek
`community festival. The total cost of the memorial was $2,500.
Students at Northview High School generally
range in age from 14-18 years old. They were
just 3-7 years old when the tragedy of 9/11
struck America, but they vow to never forget
the innocent victims of the ruthless terror
attacks.
The memorial is quite
moving. Each flag
represents a life that
was lost on 9/11. Upon
seeing all 2,977 flags
up close and personal,
it’s hard not to feel emotional over the
senseless loss of life.

Seven schools rank within the Top 20
Greetings Fellow Titans:
It is with great pride that I release to you the 2012 SAT composite
scores for our students at Northview. As you can see below,
Northview continues to lead the way for Fulton County and we are
currently ranked second in the state for test composite. I know our
students and teachers are working extremely hard to continue our
legacy as the best high school in Georgia. Thank you for your
continued support.
Although rankings are not officially released, data shows that seven schools in Fulton are
among the highest-scoring schools in the state.

Session: School Governance Councils , Sept
24, Sept 27, Oct 1, Oct 2, and Oct. 10.
As schools within Fulton County transition to the
charter system, each will form a School Governance
Council (SGC). Each SGC will be comprised of
parents/guardians, teachers, community members,
school employees, the principal and, at the high
school level, students. The SGC will play a critical
role in the success of each school, working with the
school community to design innovative solutions to
increase academic achievement that meet the
unique needs of the school community.

Homecoming
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
FOR NORTHVIEW'S
HOMECOMING DANCE
Homecoming Dance is on Saturday, October
13th. The Homecoming Committee is
looking for parent volunteers to help with
coat check-in during the event. Please consider
volunteering for one of the following
shifts, 7:15-9:30 p.m. or 9:30-11:30 p.m.
This is a great way to be at Homecoming
without actually having your child see you.
We would love to have Dads come and
help as well. You may sign up for one shift

Hands On Northview

Everyone is invited to join in this morning
of community service as we work together
to make Northview a better place! Two
areas will be the focus – where the trailers
were removed and the area behind the
visitor seating at the stadium. Please meet
at the front door of the school to sign in and
for job assignments and refreshments. For
Students, this is a great way to earn your
service hours and help your club win The
Golden Shovel Award. Snacks and drinks
will be provided.
Parent to Parent
The Parent to Parent workshop begins
Thursday October 11, 2012. This four
week video-based series is free and
offers a proactive and positive
approach to parenting. Participants
view and then discuss the challenges
and strategies for raising children in
today’s culture. This four week
workshop meets in the Northview
Media Center, located across from the
Front Office, from 7:00 – 9:00
p.m. The sessions dates are Thursday
October 11, 18, 25, and November 1,
2012. You will find this information
on the PTSA website under the About
PTSA, Forms tab where it lists Parent
to Parent Class Information. To
register contact Donna
Evans. Advanced registration is

According to the city of
Johns Creek, while the
city enjoys a relatively
safe environment with
no homicide occurrence
in recent years,
the rate of suicide in
the city should draw
attention from the
community. This is
why the City of Johns
Creek has created a Suicide
Prevention Task Force. The Suicide Prevention
Task Force consists of Members of the
City of Johns Creek, Community Business Members
and the Northeast Learning Community
PTSAs.
September is National Suicide Prevention
Month, and October focuses on National Bullying
Prevention and Mental Illness Awareness
Week. The NHS PTSA supports the city's effort
in their suicide prevention campaign. Among a
month long of activities to raise awareness in
this community, the city will be hosting four Suicide
Prevention Community Awareness Meetings.
These meetings are open to the community.

The City feels that if you are a parent, family
member, friend, co-worker or neighbor, that we,
as a community-at-large, can play an important
role at saving a life. While professional help is
essential in providing the proper care and support
services to someone suffering this condition,
it is parents and family members who provide
a safe environment for youths and/or an
adult to comfortably talk about risks and concerns.
Northview HS PTSA invites you to attend
one of these important public forums to learn
about the concerns that affect our City, what
signs to look for and how to get the help needed.
These public forums will have the same speakers
and professional counselors. Important statistics
and pertinent information will be available
at these meetings. The different dates and locations
were set up for your convenience and to
help spread the word city-wide. The expected
audience for these public forums
are adults.

Over the past several weeks, I have heard many
questions, concerns and thoughts regarding House
Resolution 1162, commonly called the Charter
Schools Amendment, which is a complex piece of
legislation affecting all Georgia school systems. For
this reason, the Fulton County School System has
created a brief Q & A on the topic that may answer
questions you and others may have.
The Fulton County Board of Education and
Administrative Staff have not taken a position
regarding HR 1162. Therefore, this information is
not intended to endorse or recommend an opinion
but is simply our way of keeping stakeholders

Athletics:
Northview Athletic Association (NAA) is sponsoring a
fundraiser for campus improvement. Campus
improvement includes signage on campus....the first
was the big Ns at the Bus and Gym entrances, and
storage solutions at the stadium. The big event of the
year is www.runningzombies.com.
This is a 7pm evening 5K run/walk where you dress as
a human or a zombie. All profits from the November
3rd event at Newtown Park, benefit Northview High
School and the athletics department.
Students can register in the coming week at Northview for $30.
Online registration does accept credit card payment. Registration at school will require cash or a
check to Northview Athletics.

Northview Cross Country Team
“Hits the Ground Running”
The Northview HS Cross Country team (XC) trained by
“Coach” Mike Morris opened their 2012 season on
September 8 with a rush competing with 17 other area
high schools at the Covered Bridge Run in Roswell
GA. They are 50 kids strong, 20 girls and 30
boys. The boy’s team is led by seniors Eric Beppler, Matt Ruhlin and Santul Bapat. Josh Salter,
Jamie Cunningham and Philip Utesch also contribute mightily to the team. The girls are led by
seniors; Caitlin Macrina and Stephanie Meier and freshman; Lindsay Billings, Shannon Marsh,
Anna Barefield and Shannon Isaacs. Miranda Hermes, Kate Finn and Rebecca Burkley are also
very valuable to the team. The entire team, boys and girls, are working very hard to qualify for the
state meet in November.

Varsity Volleyball
Northview Varsity Volleyball 2012
The Northview Varsity Volleyball team
participated in the Volleyball at the Beach
Tournament in Brunswick, Georgia on September
14th and 15th. There were twenty teams
participating in the tournament from Georgia and
South Carolina. Our varsity players were
undefeated during the two day tournament and
came home with the first place trophy in the
"Gold" bracket.
Our Northview Lady Titans are coached by Dan
Kearney and Chris Stoner. The players worked
hard and won the tournament in a true team
fashion! The Northview parents and coaches
couldn't be prouder. Congratulations Ladies!!!
This year the Northview Varsity Volleyball team
has nine senior players and one senior manager.
Amanda Dachs, Paige Steioff, Emily Gaines, Jeri
Juba, Kelly Rockers, Rachel Rice, Caroline
Skjoedt, Natalie Rames, Lauren Unruh have
played for Northview for the past 4 years and
Taylor Bryan played for three years before
becoming one of the managers. The Head Coach
is Dan Kearney and the Assistant Coach is Chris
Stoner. All the best ladies...enjoy your SENIOR

Swim & Dive Team Tryouts

Tryouts will be held Monday through Friday at
Swim Atlanta, Johns Creek from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m.
before school. Rosters will be posted on this
website on Sat. Oct. 27.
Mon. Oct. 29 - Practice begins
Practice is mandatory for all swimmers with the
exception of some year-round swimmers. The
coaches will determine which swimmers are
exempt. Practices are held EVERY WEEKDAY
MORNING from 6 a.m. - 7 a.m. at Swim Atlanta,
Johns Creek.
Tues. Oct. 30 - Dive In Meeting at NHS
Media Center, 6:30 pm
This meeting is MANDATORY for all swimmers
and divers that make the team. This will be a one
time opportunity to order team suits, warm ups,
spiritwear and be issued a team parka. Parents
will also have the opportunity to sign up for your
required volunteer opportunities.

Varsity Softball
VARSITY
SOFTBALL
BEGINS SEASON
WITH 2 - 1 AAAA
REGION RECORD
The 2012 Varsity
Softball team is
following up a 2011
playoff run with a
good start to the
new season. The
Lady Titans, led by
Seniors Elise
Smith, Gretchen
Hamman and
Sydney Roberts,
are 2 - 1 in region play - already beating Forsyth
Central and Osborne and losing a close game to
region leading Sequoyah. Varsity softball in
Georgia starts on Aug 1 and the playoffs begin
at the end of September. Northview has 7
region games between September 13 and
September 26 to determine the Lady Titan's
playoff position.
Four year starter Elise Smith leads the team.
Pitching has been handled by freshmen
Makenzie Flynt and Melissa Muench. The top 3
hitters thru 16 games are junior Rachel Sable
(.447), senior Elise Smith (.400) and freshman
Lexa Muench (.343). The Lady Titans are
building a strong base for success with six
freshman and three sophomore players on the
varsity roster and five 8th graders playing on
the Jr Titan team. Season highlights through 16
games include a HR by Elise Smith, a 1 hitter
pitched by Makenzie Flynt, numerous
spectacular diving catches by the Lady Titans,
and a game-ending “too close to call” play
against Johns Creek in our annual cross-town
classic.
