Farewell to the Matrics
What a weekend it has been! On Friday we said farewell to the matrics as they attended their
last school day. It was an emotional occasion as we bid farewell as a school to a very special
group of young people. Every year a staff member is chosen by the matric group to take the final
assembly for the matrics. This year Mr Duffield and Mrs Robertson were chosen to share a joint
message and a bit of pupil history about each of the matrics of 2009.
The staff members went beyond what was expected and based their theme on a matric group
selected for the ISSF (International School Sports Federation) to participate in international sports
games in Dubai. Each matric pupil was assessed and placed in this team that would participate in
the games. A power point presentation was shown with a running commentary from the two sports
coaches that had to select the team.
Mr Duffield then shared a message with the matrics about not forgetting what they've done in the
past, learning from their mistakes and persevering. A big thanks to all those parents who
contributed video clips and photographs.
Six matrics also sang a beautiful song at the beginning of assembly which brought tears to many
eyes. Amie Bebb, Natalie Janse van Rensburg, Kate Tanner, Caitlin Liebenberg, Snothile
Malinga, Nondumiso Zondo.
2009 Matrics
Saturday night’s dinner where parents, staff and matrics met together to share a meal,
recognized the importance of the joint input of home and school in getting our young people
to this point in their lives - where they are indeed ready to go out into the world.
On Sunday we joined together to thank God for our young people, for loaning them to us and
for protecting them over the course of their lives - and we committed them to the Lord as they
leave us. Each matric pupil was presented with a personalised Bible embossed with the
Treverton badge.
POST MATRIC SOURCE TO SEA EXPEDITION
Post Matrics 2009
On the 6th November the 13 Post Matric students will embark on a life-changing trip that
begins at the source of the Tugela river and ends 502km later. They will carry the message
of the importance of water conservation along the length of the Tugela River. Using any nonmotorised
method of travel, they will climb, abseil, hike, swim, paddle and white water raft,
cycle, run and walk from the source of the Tugela along the length of river.
The students, who will have spent this year on leadership, life skills and outdoor pursuit
programmes, plan to meet the communities and interact with the learners from the schools
along the Tugela on important water issues. They will share ideas and experiences with the
people who are most reliant on the Tugela for their livelihoods and wellbeing and who are
custodians of these water systems and its water management.
The objective of the expedition is to create awareness of the environmental issues
surrounding this scarce resource in South Africa; aimed at the public at large, but more
specifically at those communities most impacted on by environmental issues along the
Tugela.
Now in the final planning and fundraising phase, Treverton’s Post Matrics who are
responsible for the fundraising, logistical planning, managing and running the trip from
source to sea, will be the youngest group yet to embark on this journey. The trip will test their
team, leadership and communication skills, as well as their strength, fitness and courage as
they traverse Kwa-Zulu Natal from the high mountains on a three week journey to the sea.
SAILING (Mr H Venter)
On Sunday we took 14 boys sailing on Midmar Dam. HMYC had organised a fun sailing day.
They organised the sailors into two groups. After an introductory speech regarding safety on
the water the boys and girls in group 1 were placed on different yachts skippered by
experienced yachtsmen while group 2 was given a practical demonstration on tying knots.
After an hour the two groups were swopped around. It was an enjoyable outing and our boys
had the opportunity to experience something different.
CRICKET
U13A vs Cowan House (Coach: Mr N Robertson)
The U13A cricket team played against Cowan House yesterday. In the 20 over game we batted
first and made 116 runs. Tristan was easily our best batsman, making 45. Cowan House did not
reach our score. All the children contributed in their bowling and fielding. It was a very exciting
game for all involved.
U10 vs Cowan House (Coach: Mr H Venter)
On Wednesday the U10’s played against Cowan House. This was a match we were looking
forward to as we have always had excellent matches against them.
We won the toss and chose to bat. Our top order batsmen failed to step up and make the scores
they are capable of. A lack of discipline and patience has led to their downfall. Fortunately the
middle order tackled the task at hand and we eventually made 102 for 10. This I felt was a
defendable score.
Cowan House batted exceptionally well and were on target to reach our score. However, once our
bowlers settled in and got their line and length right, wickets began to fall. They were eventually all
out for 68 runs.
Our bowling stats
Darren - 5 wickets
Juhan - 2 wickets.
Event though weather conditions were not the best we all enjoyed the match.
U10 vs Scottsville (Coach: Mr H Venter)
On Saturday we played cricket against Scottsville in Pietermaritzburg. Playing conditions were not
the best, extreme heat and a pitch that needs a serious overhaul. We batted first and battled to
come to terms with a pitch that played very irregularly. We put ourselves under a lot of pressure
by continually loosing wickets. We eventually made 60 runs.
Juhan Muller and Tim Lang both made 21 runs.
They then batted. We had a sniff at winning the match because we had bowled well and they were
down to their last two batsmen and they still needed 9 runs to win. Some poor fielding enabled
them to pass our score. They beat us by 2 wickets.
Best bowlers
Luke Robertson 3 wickets
Juhan Muller 3 wickets.
Joshua Norman 2 wickets.
U9 vs Cowan House (Coach: Miss A Kerr)
On Wednesday afternoon the U9 Cricket boys played their first match of the term against Cowan
House. We won the toss and chose to bat first. We managed to score 61 runs for 8 wickets under
severely windy conditions in our allotted 20 overs. Cowan House went in to bat after tea and took
advantage of the conditions and reached our score in the 10th over. We look forward to improving
in the rest of the games this term.
COLLEGE NEWS
INTERHOUSE PUBLIC SPEAKING (Mr E Graham)
Mr Graham tallied up the scores and was pleased (being a Harland supporter) to see that
Harland had won - but then realised that Harland had used two Seniors instead of one Senior
and a Junior - so they had to be relegated.
The final scores were:
Campbell first - 13 points
Jonsson second - 12 points
Harland third - 10 points
Best speakers: Seniors - Blair Smith - Harland
Juniors - Thoko-Ntsiki Bucibo - Campbell
BASKETBALL
Basketball 1st Team (Coach: R Wyatt-Minter)
The first team basketball have done well so far this term winning two out of their first four
games.
Their first game was against Heritage Academy where we managed to sneak a win in the
dying seconds of the game, to win 20 points to 19. We then faced Weston on their court, but
due to a power failure the game had to be abandoned after the first quarter with Treverton
leading 9 points to 6.
Our next game was against Carter on their home ground. It was a very closely contested
game, with a lot of unnecessary fouls being committed by both sides. We held them to one
point for the first three quarters, but after losing our dependable point guard, Zweli Hadebe,
we were in trouble. Even though Nelli Ngubane stepped up to the plate in his first game for
the first squad, we could not hold Carter’s shooting guards. We lost the game by 41 points to
31.
On Thursday evening last week our first team met up again against Weston’s firsts. It was a
very physical game, with many overly-determined players trying to prove a point. Our boys
held their heads and dominated the game from the start. With excellent defence and well
planned offence Treverton’s firsts ripped through the Weston’s zone to win the game 49
points to 31.
We then played against St Nicholas at home. Bad passes, shabby rebounds and feeble fouls
resulted in us making our opponents look a lot better than they were. After a stern team talk
our team came back within five points of St Nicholas, showing them what we are made of.
But they proved to be too fast for our squad and eventually won the game by 45 points to 35.
We meet Alexandra High away later on this week.
1st Team
Basketball 2nd Team vs Carter (Coach: Mr A de Beer)
On Wed 21 October our Basketball 2nd Team played against Carter U16A. We played really
well in spite of having only six players, and led 14-13 at half time. In the second half, one of
our key players was fouled out (5 fouls) and so we had to continue the rest of the game
without him and had no replacements. At the final whistle the scores were tied 28-28.
We then played extra time and Carter were able to score 3 baskets against us. They
eventually won the game 35-28. Well done, especially to Dean Keague who showed great
determination in playing for us after his very serious illness. We are proud of you.
HOCKEY
5-a-side Hockey Tournament
The weather was favourable last week Saturday as many teams from the South Coast,
Howick, Estcourt, Mooi River, Prep and College joined together for a fun-filled day on the
astro. This year the format was changed from the regular 7-a-side played on half a turf to a
5-a-side played on a quarter field, thereby allowing more players to play at one time.
The first whistle blew at 09:00 and final at 14:30.
Team Small Story
The finals were played between Small Story and Kiaora. It was 2 – 2 at the end of time and
the teams went into extra time to play golden goal. Mr de Wet narrowly missed the winning
goal within the first minute of extra time. Small Story counter attacked and managed to sneak
the victory away from Kiaora.
A wonderful time was had by all, many spot prizes were given away. Thank you to
Groundcover, Kentucky, WSP, N3TC for their sponsorship.
Thank you to the parents that participated and for their support.
WATERPOLO
1 st Girls vs Epworth
On the 17th of the October the 1st team waterpolo girls travelled to Thomas More College in
Kloof to take part in the KZN top 10 waterpolo event.
This was the first time the girls played in a full size waterpolo polo. The girls found the
matches very tough but improved with every game. It was good experience and gave the
girls that are staying next year great experience.
Ist Girls vs Epworth
On the 21st October the 1st girls played Epworth in Pietermaritzburg. The girls had a poor
start letting in three goals in the first chakka. However they came back very well in the next
two chakka’s scoring 5 goals and with Jennifer Denton and Caitlen Liebenberg defending
their strong centre forward very well. The final score was 9-5 to Treverton. Goal scorers
Tamryn Strumper, Natailie Van Rensburg, and Kathleen Buchanan. Lady of the match was
Kathleen Buchanan for her 7 goals.
Ist Girls vs Carter
On 23 rd October the 1st team girls played Carter in Pietermaritzburg. The girls played well in
the first three chakka's scoring 4 great goals. The score going into the last chakka was 4-4.
Some poor defence let Carter score two quick goals in the last chakka. We got one back but
could not find the back of net again after a couple of poor shots straight at the keeper.
Final score 7-5 to Carter. Goal scorers, Tamryn Strumpher, Natalie Van Rensburg, Shonagh
Talbot and Sarah Rowney. Lady of the match Tamryn Strumpher.
CRICKET
Cricket vs Carter
First Team (Coach: Mr S Whitfield)
Treverton hosted Carter High on a warm sunny day. Treverton won the toss and chose to
bat. A good hard batting wicket saw the runs flow steadily in the morning session. Dean
Wickham (38) and Reece Cairns played a patient 95 out of the total of 254 for 6 and was
caught in the deep of the last ball of the innings attempting to go for the big six and triple
figures. Carter came to the crease after lunch and were soon in trouble when opening bowler
Michael Hanly picked up 4-20. Cairns cashed in on a good day and cleaned up the tail with
4-8 to see Carter all out for 90 in 31 overs. Result: Treverton won by 144 runs.
2nd Team (Coach: Mr L Duffield)
On Saturday the 24th October the Second Team travelled to Pietermaritzburg to play Carter
High. The boys knew that this would be a tough match and that they needed a win
desperately for team morale.
We won the toss and elected to field first as the day was predicted to be at least 34 degrees
and the boys wanted to be as fresh as they could on the field. We kept Carter's run-rate very
modest for over half of their innings but, unfortunately, the heat caught up with the boys and
we started to let things slip. From a modest run-rate Carter took this opportunity and started
slogging, to score a total of 209 all out (with one ball remaining in the innings).
After lunch we had our work cut out for us and went in hungry for a win. We could see heavy
thunder clouds in the distance above us and knew we had to work hard in the short time we
had. After losing three wickets things looked better as a strong partnership between Brandon
Kutu and Tyrone Corfield developed. A win was within reach.
The weather had other ideas though and the heavens opened, soaking the pitch and ending
our innings with us making 66 for three. According to the Duckworth-Lewis system we may
have won the match, but because we didn’t play 20 overs or more in our innings, it cannot
apply. I'm sure, however, that even without this, the team can be happy with a draw.
Mr Duffield would like to commend the boys on their excellent team spirit and good
behaviour. Thanks also to Genevieve and Nokwanda for scoring.
U15 vs Carter (Coach: Mr J Hyam)
The sun was shining and the boys were upbeat ahead of their encounter with Carter on
Saturday morning! We chose to bat and our openers, Etian van Zuydam and Rickus van der
Westhuizen, got off to a flying start! Unfortunately after seeing off the opening bowlers they
lost concentration and both gave away their wickets very easily. the rest of the team followed
suit and all were bowled out for 79. We were confident as we had bowled Carter out for 40 in
the first term. Unfortunately this was not o be a repeat and Carter reached our target with five
wickets down.
U14 vs Howick (Coach: Mr K Pooler)
This was a much better performance from Treverton. Batting first we totalled 75, top scorers
being David Grace and Oliver Bouwer with 15 runs each and Kian Gogle with 14. Howick
passed our score but not before Oliver had bowled superbly to take 3/25. We lost the game
by 7 wickets.
U14 vs Carter (Coach: Mr K Pooler)
Llewellyn van Zyl played a captain's knock of 24 and Dylan Heymans cracked 12 off only
eight balls but a total of 46 runs was never going to be enough. Oliver Bouwer again bowled
well to take 3 wickets. Carter were winners by 7 wickets.
POST MATRIC (Report: Ciaran Bayley)
From the 19th to the 22nd of October, the Post Matric’s embarked on a four day Ocean
sailing course with Offshore Sailing Academy that took place in the Durban harbor.
We arrived at the harbor enthusiastic, motivated and a tad apprehensive, nevertheless, we
walked on. We went straight to our lecture rooms. There we were introduced to our
instructors and the manager in charge and the rest of the crew. We did not waste any time at
all, we were given the basic rules of the course and were immediately given our lunch list
orders to fill in. This would become an automatic routine every morning. Then we sat in on a
lecture on the basic parts of the boat and how to do basic knots.
From there we unpacked our bags from the bus and walked the shaky harbor walkway. We
would then have to enter a huge protective gate with a metal tag that would allow you in to
the harbor - everyone received one. Then we chose our rooms on the boats. We unpacked
and changed.
The groups were (Boat 1 - Natasha) Andy, Tim. F, Bianca, Callie, Bayley and Kerryn, with
skipper Van!
(Boat 2- Nina) Matthew, Tim.B, Murray, Alistair, Patricia ,John and Melissa, with skipper G.T.
For the next four days we learnt how to man a boat, do complicated but quickly accessible
knots, navigate a yacht, practiced man over board and lived the life of sailors, which I might
add is not easy.
After every day we sprayed, washed and scrubbed the yachts which were 7 tonners.
After this we would race to the showers and toilets on- shore at The Royal Natal Yacht Club.
From there we would attend suppers in various different places i.e. The Revolving
Restaurant (very posh but unfortunately it did not revolve that night, once again the Watts
house (amazing company and traditional S.A food- Braai) and finally the yacht club.
The sights we were luckily fortunate to see were whales, dolphins and a hammerhead shark,
with an abundant variety of birds and obviously an amazing ocean. And a cuttlefish which
was caught while fishing on the dock, we also marveled over gigantic ocean liners and
amazingly built luxury ships. One even had a trampoline on it.
I can proudly say NOBODY got sick, touch wood.
On the 23rd of October the same week the Posties did the ocean sailing they were off again -
to now conquer the sky.
Not all Posties wanted to complete there sky diving jumps or they already had done a
tandem (where an instructor is strapped to you and you free fall from 9000 ft for 30 sec!
Unfortunately its only one jump). The few brave or should I say challenged Posties took to
the sky to either complete there last static line jump (individual jump but a static line is
attached to the plane so you don’t have to pull your own ‘chute out and you get 3 jumps but
only from 3000ft) or to try a brand new experience- Tandem .
Sky diving gives you a new lease on life. You get to experience your life passing by while you
ridiculously willingly jump out of an airplane, which I might add DOESN’T have a door on or
any seatbelts! Try that for risk management! Then you rely on a pretty colored piece of fabric
to keep you alive. But I say this - it is one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had.
On the same day we went to Pinetown and did a shooting course. We were once again split
in to two groups.
We had the opportunity to shoot a .22 hand gun, 9mm hand gun, .357 magnum pistol and a
12-guage shot gun. We all had time for a little practice at a 5m target. Then the best three of
each group had a competition .Winning was not the aim but enjoying it and learning
something new was something we all got to achieve.
Many thanks to our parents once again for allowing us to be able to do these amazing once
in a life time opportunities. And many thanks Mr. Davies for all your support and lifts.
