POST MATRIC SOURCE TO SEA EXPEDITION
Post Matrics 2009
On the 6th November the 13 Post Matric students will embark on a life-changing trip that
begins at the source of the Tugela river and ends 502km later. They will carry the message
of the importance of water conservation along the length of the Tugela River. Using any nonmotorised
method of travel, they will climb, abseil, hike, swim, paddle and white water raft,
cycle, run and walk from the source of the Tugela along the length of river.
The students, who will have spent this year on leadership, life skills and outdoor pursuit
programmes, plan to meet the communities and interact with the learners from the schools
along the Tugela on important water issues. They will share ideas and experiences with the
people who are most reliant on the Tugela for their livelihoods and wellbeing and who are
custodians of these water systems and its water management.
The objective of the expedition is to create awareness of the environmental issues
surrounding this scarce resource in South Africa; aimed at the public at large, but more
specifically at those communities most impacted on by environmental issues along the
Tugela.
Now in the final planning and fundraising phase, Treverton’s Post Matrics who are
responsible for the fundraising, logistical planning, managing and running the trip from
source to sea, will be the youngest group yet to embark on this journey. The trip will test their
team, leadership and communication skills, as well as their strength, fitness and courage as
they traverse Kwa-Zulu Natal from the high mountains on a three week journey to the sea.
Our Grade Ones having fun on their playground!
Grade One and Two mini cricket at St Charles
The grade one and two boys played there first mini cricket matches of the term. The Grade two
boys played exceedingly well winning by twenty four runs. The Grade one boys also played well
but had a much closer match winning by three runs. All played well and must be commended on
their excellent manners.
CRICKET
Under 10 Cricket (Coach: Mr H .Venter)
On Wednesday we played against Kings School at Nottingham Road. The weather was not very
favourable as a heavy mist decended. We, however, decided to play in the murky conditions.
We were put into bat and battled to make runs as the outfield was very heavy and the ball did not
travel far. Luke Robertson (16 runs) and Tim Lang (33 not out) were our best batsmen on the
day. We eventually made 90 runs for seven wickets.
Kings batted and were bowled out for 37 runs.
Our top bowlers were:
Joshua Norman - 3 wickets
Somganda Chonco - 3 wickets
Juhuan Muller - 2 wickets.
I was very pleased with our boys all round performance.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR NOLAN FROM ALL OF US!
MITCHELL IN ITALY
There were over 300 drivers from 36 countries, in 4 categories, that took part in the Rok
International Final. Sunday 25th October was D day at the Lake Garda Karting Circuit in Lenato.
Mitchell Licen a Grade 8 pupil, had a terrible qualifier on Friday, due to mechanical failure. This
meant that he had to start from 26th on the grid for all three qualifying races on Saturday. He had to
work very hard to get to the front to accumulate as many points as possible. He finished 15th,6th
&13th, which gave him 21st position to start in the final. Mitchell was very disappointed, as he was
hoping for a much better result. ( His lap times throughout the weekend were always in the top 3
fastest lap times, for all sessions.)
Nobody thought Mitchell would finish in the top 10. He proved us all wrong! In only 12 laps he
stormed through the field and managed to finish an incredible 5th place! His fellow South African,
Roman de Beer, started on the front row & won the final & is now the world champion. Mitchell
received a trophy and 250Euro voucher. He also won the nations cup with his team-mate Aston
Hare for the country with the most points in the final. They will share the winning trophy that they
won.
GRADE 11 LEADERSHIP CAMP
Leadership camp was an experience to be remembered and people classified it as an
amazing three days. We learnt so much about working together as a team. The activities
stretched our emotional barriers and allowed us to work on our strengths and weaknesses,
when working in a team by pushing us to the limit.
The way in which our grade united was a sight to see and it showed us what we are capable
of achieving in our last year at school.
It was an amazing opportunity to learn the true depths of people in our grade. We had the
opportunity to gain trust between everyone and we all became even closer as a whole.
Everyone in the grade made a general comment that they felt like they learnt so much about
themselves as individuals. Our grade said the biggest value that they learnt and will carry
with them for many years to come was the fact that we all need respect and we will always
be in a user-friendly environment. Even more important was that we learnt to trust our peers
and to try new things.
The camp was situated in the most beautiful valley ever, and the food was amazingly great!
Our leaders were truly inspirational and will never be forgotten; they revealed
things to us as a grade that we would have never have seen without their help. The lessons
we learnt on those three days will definitly help us appreciate life in the future.
WATERPOLO (Coach: Mr B de Wet)
Over the last 2 weeks Treverton boys waterpolo have played 3 games with our 1st team
playing against Michaelhouse 2nd team, Hilton 2nd team and the local derby against Weston
1st team, whilst our juniors have taken on Michaelhouse and Hilton under 15 B's and Weston
juniors. The junior side have won all three of their games, and won them convincingly. The
first game against Michaelhouse was the first time the juniors had played together as a team,
with a lot of the boys playing waterpolo for the first time ever. However this did nothing to
quash their confidence as they cruised to a comfortable victory of 8-1. Goals coming from
man of the match Sean Talbot and captain Uys Louw. The second game was against
Weston at home which we won by 13 goals to zero. which Talbot again scoring the majority
of the goals, helped out by Louw again and Robin Schell-Hammer. In the most recent game,
against Hilton, we were made to work a lot harder on defence, with our goal keeper being
tested a lot more, and our boys having to swim back and help out. The boys won that game
7-2, with Talbot Louw and Schell-Hammer all scoring goals. Man of the match in that game
was Goran Vujovic. In 3 games Sean Talbot has scored 23 goals. Remarkable for a boy in
his 1st season of waterpolo!
The 1st teams fortunes have been slightly different, playing 3 games, of which they won one,
lost one and drew one. Against Michaelhouse 2nds they lost 5-3, with a couple of silly errors
costing them 2 goals against them and one for them. It was a very tight game that could have
gone either way, unfortunately it went against us. Goals came from Matthew Smith, Devlin
Burgess and Tyrone Corfield. In the game against Weston we won 14-1, with the boys
playing a very open game using all the available space, with goals coming from Smith,
Corfield, Mike Reynolds, captain James Coetzee, John Elliot, William Lesar, Patrick Durham
and Pieter Veenstra. The game against Hilton was an incredibly tight affair with the final
score being 5 all! Goal scorers were Smith, Durham, Corfield and Lesar, with Patrick Durham
scoring a fantastic goal just after the final whistle, which would have won us the game had it
been before that whistle.

BASKETBALL
2nd Team vs St Nicholas
On Monday 26 October we played against St Nicholas 2nd Team. We had an excellent
game, creating numerous scoring opportunities and this enabled us to end convincing 22-10
winners.
Our top scorers were Michael Masella, Sizwe Shabalala and Shane Granger. Sizwe and
Shane are still both Juniors and showed they already have the skills and the potential to
compete really well in the Senior ranks.
2nd Team vs Alex
On Tuesday 27 October our Basketball 2nd Team played against Alex U16 at Alex High
School. Our team of 6 included 4 of our U15 players.
We took a while to settle down in the 1st Quarter, due to travel-lag down to Pietermaritzburg
and no time to warm up before the match and Alex soon opened up a 12 point lead.
However, for the rest of the game we competed exceptionally well and finished strongly.
The final score was 37-29 and our boys must be commended on a superb performance to
finish only 8 points behind a very good Alex team.
U15 Team vs Alex
On Tuesday 27 October our Basketball U15 Team played against Alex U15 at Alex High
School. Half of our team for this match had just finished playing for our 2nds
but showing true Treverton courage and willingness to give of their best, our boys surprised
the Alex team with their determination in defence and strong finishing skills on attack.
At half-time we held a 10 point lead and although fatigue started setting in for those playing
their second full game, we held on to a narrow, but well-deserved, 38-36 win.
This was the first win for our Treverton Juniors against Alex for at least the past nine years
(18 seasons of Basketball). It was well worth the wait, and our boys can be proud of this
outstanding achievement – not just because they won, but because of the manner in which
they achieved it.
