Limestone, tly coursed and dressed Irk and some ashlar. Enclosure walls of approx. 6ft high, located be een the canal towpath an e River Frome, a have stone copings. Two shutes in the canal-faci gwall, which once had timber, ards hinged at the bottom to facilitate unloading of coal by wheebarrow along planks from bar es to the pen. Corners of walls are curved, to allow cart access from towpath, and incorporate 1aw Cl 9 wrought-iron gate. Shipments of coal from the Stroudwate'r Canel, opened in 1779 for^e supply of coal and other materials to the textile mills of the Stroud Valley, were unloaded in this pen. It is the only survivor on this canal, and significant in vyew of its relationship to this hi orically important industrial area, which includes some of the earliestand mostarchitecturally dj inguishedstructures associated with the growth of the textile indtstry from the late seventeen century in Britain. The pens supplied the key sites at Stanley MiJl'(grade I) and Ebley Mill (11*) so owned by the Marley family. They are prominently located,in'the Stroud industrial Herita onservation Area. Brick examples of such pens have survived in the West Midlands, althoug hey are all brick built, lacking the distinctive appearance of>these ashlar walls and asso ted gates, and do not have the direct historical associations, ind context of this example. z vNsS \@ Signed by authority of the Secretary of State PAUL JOHNSON Dated: 7/t Department for Culture, Media and Sport
