2. Z<strong>in</strong>c Flotation<br />

Z<strong>in</strong>c is floated after <strong>the</strong> lead-copper m<strong>in</strong>erals have been recovered<br />

through selective collectors. If a xanthate is used as <strong>the</strong> primary<br />

collector <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> AEROPHINE <strong>3418A</strong> promoter, <strong>the</strong> iron not<br />

floated at that stage may cause problems <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> subsequent flotation<br />

<strong>of</strong> z<strong>in</strong>c. In such cases, it is recommended that a selective flotation be<br />

conducted aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The z<strong>in</strong>c m<strong>in</strong>erals should be floated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> traditional manner,<br />

replac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> xanthate with a thionocarbamate (such as <strong>the</strong><br />

AERO XD600 or XD601 promoters) or an XD5000 collector.<br />

Dithiophosphates can be used as auxiliary collectors when xanthates,<br />

thionocarbamates, or <strong>the</strong> XD5000 collectors are used as primary<br />

collectors.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> xanthate is replaced with a thionocarbamate or an<br />

XD5000 collector, <strong>the</strong> latter should be dosed at a ratio <strong>of</strong> one gram<br />

for every three grams <strong>of</strong> xanthate, while for dithiophosphates <strong>the</strong><br />

ratio should be one to one.<br />

Alkal<strong>in</strong>ity<br />

The pH <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> circuit will depend on <strong>the</strong> z<strong>in</strong>c concentration <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

marmatite ore. Higher concentrations will require higher alkal<strong>in</strong>ity,<br />

rang<strong>in</strong>g from pH 9.5 to 10.5. The pH level should be adjusted<br />

with lime.<br />

Activation<br />

Activation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> z<strong>in</strong>c m<strong>in</strong>eral is achieved with copper sulfate at a<br />

dosage <strong>of</strong> about 50 g/tonne for each one percent <strong>of</strong> z<strong>in</strong>c <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> heads.<br />

Recommended Collectors for Z<strong>in</strong>c Flotation<br />

AERO XD601 promoter, AERO XD600 promoter and AERO<br />

XD201 promoter, among o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

2.1 Collector Dosages for Z<strong>in</strong>c<br />

The XD5000 collectors and <strong>the</strong> thionocarbamates are fed at a dosage<br />

<strong>of</strong> 0.5 to 1.0 g/tonne for each 0.1 percent <strong>of</strong> z<strong>in</strong>c <strong>in</strong> heads, with<br />

<strong>the</strong> pH between 9.0 and 9.5. The dithiophosphates require higher<br />

alkal<strong>in</strong>ity (pH 10.0 to 10.5), with dosages rang<strong>in</strong>g from one to two<br />

g/tonne for each 0.1 percent <strong>of</strong> z<strong>in</strong>c <strong>in</strong> heads.<br />

The z<strong>in</strong>c associated with sphalerite generally requires lower dosages <strong>of</strong><br />

collector and fro<strong>the</strong>r, and a lower dosage <strong>of</strong> lime.<br />
