Why re-seed
One of the best ways for any farmer to
reduce costs is to produce more feed on farm.
For many livestock farmers the production
of grass is the predominant source of feed.
The cost of production is a major consideration for all livestock farmers
in relation to the end product whether it is a litre of milk or a Kg of live
weight gain. Grassland plays an important part in this. Some of the key
benefits include the following:-
• Cropping management is flexible. it provides grazing
or ensiled feed for most of the year
• high energy feed, which is very digestible
• bulk yields are large
• highly palatable to stock
• provides a source of protein, particularly in clover leys
• Grazed grass is the cheapest form of feed
• Good grassland production will mean improved
productivity and profits
Mixture seleCtiON
When selecting a mixture, it is important that
the mix is fit for the purpose intended and the
conditions where it is to be sown. It may be
appropriate to put together a special mixture.
• are there extreme weather conditions?
• What is the ph of the soil?
• What is the soil nutrient status?
• What are you planning to feed from the ley?
• What is the planned length of the ley?
• is it for grazing or cutting?
• any weed problems?
The main advantages of re-seeding include:-
increased ley production
improved animal performance
removal of toxic grasses and unwanted weeds
extended grazing season
introduction of newer improved varieties
• The longer that a field is left before
re-seeding means the longer you
will be MissiNG Out on productivity.
• Re-seeded grass increases milk production
and live weight gain as well as improving
digestibility and disease resistance.
Establishment of a grass ley
Many factors need to be considered to
ensure the best establishment of a new
ley. Correct timing and care will result in
a ley which will yield well, be weed free
and long lasting.
Sowing of a new ley can be from early spring
when the soil is warm and has sufficient
moisture, until September. To ensure good
establishment of clover leys they should be
sown by mid September.
A very firm seed bed is essential and clover
due to its seed size must be sown on the
surface. Rolling after sowing is recommended.
Incorrect depth of sowing can have a
detrimental effect on germination; increased
depth of sowing = reduced germination.
When a ley is establishing pest damage
must be checked for. Grass leys can suffer
from leatherjackets and slugs in spring and
autumn. Frit fly can be a problem in
summer or autumn.
High NDF digestibility
makes the difference
What is NDF?
Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF) is the slowly digestible part of
carbohydrates (sugars) in plants. The content and digestibility of these
are much more important to a ruminant than the rapidly digestible
sugars – Water Soluble Carbohydrates (WSC).
High NDF content
• Is important for the cows health and performance
• Improves the digestion and utilisation of nutrients
• Stimulates the rumen function, stabilises pH and adjusts the
digestion process positively
High NDF digestibility
• Gives around ¼ litre more milk per cow per day for each % unit
increase
• Increases the amount of forage metabolised by the rumen microorganisms
The forage quality element of DLF Triple Crown is based on four
different parameters with digestibility of NDF as the most important.
Unlike iSeed ® , biostimulants do not offer the
benefit of added nutrients; they simply assist the
seedling’s ability to take advantage of the soil’s own
inherent reserves of nutrient by stimulating the
soil’s microflora, resulting in improved root growth
and establishment.
GroMax is a dry formulation of natural humates and humic acids, seaweed extract, a proprietary blend of natural sugars
(sucrose), vitamins (B complex & K) soluble potash and buffering agents. The product is compatible with most micro-nutrients,
fertilisers and pesticides.
The main Countrywide mixtures are treated with GroMax at no extra cost. GroMax inclusion is indicated by the GroMax logo

A mixture composed of very high yielding Advanced Italian
Rygrass, italian and hybrid ryegrass, designed to produce
the maximum yield over 1 – 2 years.
The quality of this ley when cut at its optimum time of 67D will
provide not only an exceptional yield but forage of the highest
nutritional quality. The addition of hybrid ryegrass will assist the ley
in its ability to produce well in the second year of production whilst
the late diploid perennial ryegrass will provide a bottom in the sward
preventing the worst effects of heavy vehicles travelling the field in
perhaps not the kindest of weathers. In a normal year
67D will be achieved around 14th May.
• dual purpose mix
• for high quality silage with the benefit
of extended grazing
• Gives full two year persistence
• high tetraploid content increases sugar content and
therefore improving fermentation within the clamp
• 67d date circa 14th May
Whilst perceived as a short term ley, Silogen has the
advantage of greater longevity, it will produce high
quality forage well into its third year.
The tetraploid hybrid will provide yield and quality and the diploid
hybrid will give excellent early spring growth coupled with good yield.
The addition of an Advanced Italian Ryegrass, will increase yield and
persistance whilst improving protein content. In a normal year 67D
would be achieved around the 15th-17th May.
• 2-3 year cutting mixture
• suitable for intensive silage production
• Maximum yields of quality silage
• Can be cut 1-4 times from mid May
• high in sugar to improve fermentation and palatability
MediuM terM Mixtures
A dual purpose medium term ley of 3 – 4 years
duration although a fifth year could be achieved with
good management.
The ley is based around providing the potential of a good silage
yield and then to go on into a grazing regime, although should it be
required a second conservation cut can be obtained. This second cut
will be at 67D around six weeks after the first cut, providing sufficient
quantities of nutrients are applied to provide rapid re-growth of the
sward. The mixture will provide good early spring growth with Romark
and Polim providing good summer grazing and Elital providing good
late summer production. The use of intermediate perennial ryegrass
and hybrid ryegrass are the basis of a good conservation cut which
would be around 67D on the 25th May.
• dual purpose mixture with clover to last up to
4 harvest years
• designed with the emphasis on aftermath grazing
• Good persistence and disease resistance
• White clover blend for improved palatability
and performance
• available with iseed ®
A medium term cutting ley, where quality and quantity are
combined to produce what is probably the farmers ideal mixture.
The use of hybrid ryegrass and intermediate perennial ryegrass
provide the basis of the conservation cut with yield and quality.
The addition of Advanced Hybrid Ryegrass will improve yield, protein
content, drought tolerance and digestibility. In a normal year
67D date would be around 17th-20th May.
• Medium term cutting mixture
• provides excellent production
• provides a flexible 1-3 cut management
• blend of hybrids and perennials, for
optimum performance
• high tetraploid content for higher sugar
content and improved fermentation
The long term ley with white clover and timothy.
This combination of outstanding intermediate and late perennial
ryegrass cultivars will provide for a genuine long term grazing ley that
if required could give a late cut of silage on or around the 30th May or
can be taken as a hay crop. The mixture exhibits excellent production
and persistence and has superb all round disease resistance
particularly crown rust and drechslera. The mixture provides good
early spring growth and this continues through the late summer.
• the best all-rounder for long-term requirements
• excellent dual-purpose long term ley
• equally suited to silage, hay and grazing by all stock
• performs well under a range of management conditions
• includes timothy to increase palatability
• use of white clover blend increases intake and milk quality
• available without clover + extra 1kg twystar added
• available with iseed ®
A long term ley composed of intermediate and late perennial
ryegrass and is intended for those farms where there is a more
intensive use of grass forage.
The cultivars have been selected for their yield and digestibility and
response to high inputs. The forage when grazed at 4-6 cms will give
a very high digestibility and energy output to increase milk yields.
Calvano has high early season yields which complement the production
from the cultivar Twystar which produce abundant forage in late
summer. Once again we have placed a high emphasis on the disease
and persistence ratings of the cultivars to ensure good longevity within
the pasture.
• suitable for more intensive farming and
high quality silage production
• Can be drilled well into the autumn
• Gives good early season production
• available with 1kg clover less 1kg polim
• available with iseed ®

An excellent short term ley including red clover. The use of
italian ryegrass is to ensure maximum yields and quality from
a multicut short term ley.
The addition of red clover will improve silage quality and increase the
available protein within the ensiled forage. 67D date will be around
14-17th May. The grass element of the crop will after adequate
fertilisation return to 67D within 5 weeks subject to the normal
constraints of the weather. This will put the red clover at early bud stage
and whilst this will marginally reduce yield it will increase protein levels
of the harvested forage.
• 1-2 year red clover mix
• high protein levels throughout growing season
• improves soil structure and fertility
• red clover has the ability to yield in dry years
• suitable for the farmer wanting to place less reliance
on applied nitrogen
• 67d date circa 14-17th May
Protogen is comprised of hybrid ryegrass and red clover.
We have sought out the very best in hybrid ryegrass cultivars to
accompany our red clover blend. These grasses will compete favourably
with the aggressive growth habit of the clover, but will respond to a
dressing of straight nitrogen after cutting. This ensures the grass will
compete with the clover and that you will obtain a more balanced forage
going into the clamp. Delaying cutting to the flowering stage of the
clover will reduce protein content and will double ammonia content of
the silage. Red clover is known to possess constituents that can protect
protein during ensiling which makes this particular legume unique
amongst the non tanniferous legumes.
• 3 full years production from both the ryegrass
and red clover inclusion
• high yielding tetraploid hybrid ryegrasses are
complimented by high yielding red clovers increasing
yield and protein content
• both ryegrass and clover will be ready for re-cutting
after 6 weeks
• 67d date circa 12-16th May
after Maize Mixtures
Establishing grass after an early forage maize harvest can provide early production in the following spring thus
maximising output of fodder per acre. The species used are short term and very vigorous enabling them to
cope with the later planting date. Crops established this way can be cut or grazed in the following spring and
then returned back into maize or left down for the rest of the year. The other benefit of this technique is that
the grass helps stabilise the soil surface and helps to prevent soil run off, whilst reducing the levels of fertiliser
leaching after periods of high rainfall.
Increase sward output by up to 44%
For many years grassland farmers have accepted that productivity will fall over the
lifetime of a sward. This fall can be as much as 50% in terms of animal performance.
Weed grasses play a major role in this as they affect yield but more importantly the quality of the grass. This problem cannot
be controlled by chemical sprays but with good grassland management which includes regular overseeding. young swards
can be maintained in peak production for much longer than previously expected.
diploid varieties.
• excellent resistance to foliar diseases
• timothy improves summer palatability and colour
of the mown sward
A traditional style mixture based around the use of non
aggressive grass species like meadow fescue, timothy
and meadow grass.
These species formed the basis of very early re-seeding mixtures of
pasture land in the early 1900’s, long before intensive farming was
the norm. With the advent of farming policy reviews over the last few
years, there has been a resurgence of interest in the more extensive
ways of producing meat. The following mixture was designed to fill the
gap between the more progressive dairy farmer and the land manager
who is looking towards lower input and a more environmental
approach to farming. The following mixture will make very good hay
useful for a winter feed for many types of animal.
• Can be grazed, made into hay or haylage
• Will tolerate very wet conditions and with the addition of
smooth meadow grass will withstand the worst affects of
summer heat and drought
• Wild flowers may be added to the above provided they
are not toxic to grazing animals
