The Warlord Era and the First United Front Sun Yat-Sen’S State funeraL proCeSSion in nanJing June 1, 1929 willys ruggles peck papers, hoover institution archives 1929年6月南京市區孫中山奉安典禮遊街圖 on March 12, 1925, Sun Yat-sen died of liver cancer at the age of fifty-nine in Beijing. on March 19, Sun’s body was moved from peking union Medical College hospital to the city’s central park for public viewing. on april 2, following memorial services throughout China, Sun’s coffin was moved to the temple of azure Clouds in xiangshan, a western suburb of Beijing. Soon after Sun’s death, a committee met to plan a mausoleum in nanjing in accordance with Sun’s wishes. the committee held a public competition for the tomb; the design, by architect Lu Yanshi (who had been trained in the united States) was chosen, in part, for its similarity to the Lincoln Memorial. in 1929, a state funeral was held in nanjing in honor of Sun Yat-sen, with the nationalist party identifying itself with the heroic narrative of the revolution of 1911. planned and organized by the highest echelons of the party, it was intended to involve the entire population of the country.
