Reformers and Revolutionaries Sun Yat-Sen Kidnapped in London, 1897 hoover institution Library 孫中山所著倫敦蒙難記 in 1896, Sun Yat-sen traveled to London. the Chinese legation, alerted to his presence by Chinese diplomats in the united States, employed Slater's detective agency to follow Sun, whom it considered a threat to the Manchu dynasty. eleven days after his arrival, Manchu officials kidnapped him en route to visit his Scottish mentor, Sir James Cantlie, dean of the College of Medicine in hong kong. Sun was held captive pending extradition to China, where he could face execution. he was rescued through the efforts of Sir James, who had gained the help of the British foreign office and Scotland Yard. when the press picked up the news, the incident quickly became an international political sensation.
