ACTIVITY: Identifying vehicles with wheels<br />
1. Find pictures of three of the above examples. Look in old<br />
magazines <strong>and</strong> newspapers at home, or on the internet for<br />
pictures. Paste the pictures in below <strong>and</strong> label the axle <strong>and</strong><br />
the wheel in each picture.<br />
2. Explain carefully how a door knob is awheel <strong>and</strong> axle<br />
machine.<br />
A door knob has alarge cylinder on the outside, attached to a<br />
small cylinder on the inside. It is easier to turn the large cylinder<br />
than the small cylinder with your h<strong>and</strong>s.<br />
Let's make a simple wheel <strong>and</strong> axle mechanism to underst<strong>and</strong> how<br />
it works.<br />
ACTIVITY: A simple wheel <strong>and</strong> axle machine<br />
MATERIALS:<br />
• 2 chairs<br />
• broom h<strong>and</strong>le<br />
• string<br />
• bucket with h<strong>and</strong>le<br />
• masking tape<br />
• scissors<br />
• ruler<br />
INSTRUCTIONS:<br />
1. Place the chairs back to back, about 30 cm apart. Rest the<br />
broom h<strong>and</strong>le across the back of the chairs.<br />
2. Tie a 50 cm length of string to the bucket h<strong>and</strong>le.<br />
3. Tape the free end of the string to the middle of the broom<br />
h<strong>and</strong>le.<br />
