The above diagram shows how electricity is transferred from<br />

the power station to your home. Continue the diagram (use<br />

the space below) to draw the path of electricity once it is in<br />

your home <strong>and</strong> goes through the wires, wall socket <strong>and</strong> plugs<br />

to get to an appliance, such as the TV.<br />

2.3 Safety <strong>and</strong> electricity<br />

We use electricity every day.<br />

Electricity can be dangerous,<br />

so it is important that we use<br />

it safely. Electricity can give<br />

you an electric shock. An<br />

electric shock can hurt you<br />

badly or even kill you.<br />

High voltage is very dangerous.<br />

Look out for warning signs like<br />

these!<br />

Electricity can cause fires <strong>and</strong> injuries, even death. Here are some<br />

rules for using electricity safely:<br />

1. Do not put anything into an outlet except aplug.<br />

2. Do not pull on the cord to unplug an appliance, hold the plug<br />

<strong>and</strong> pull.<br />

3. Dry your h<strong>and</strong>s before you plug in or unplug acord.<br />

4. If a plug is broken or acord is cut or worn, do not use it.<br />

5. Do not plug too many cords into one outlet.<br />

6. Keep appliances away from water. Do not use ahair dryer if<br />

there is water nearby.<br />

7. If there is an electrical storm (with lightning), turn o <strong>and</strong><br />

disconnect electrical appliances, like the TV <strong>and</strong> computer.<br />

8. Do not touch any power lines.<br />

9. Some power lines are buried underground. If you are digging<br />

<strong>and</strong> find awire, do not touch it.<br />

10. Do not fly akite or climb atree near apower line.<br />
