ACTIVITY: Make a model of acid water breaking up<br />

rocks<br />

In real soil this change takes many years. We can make it happen in<br />

the classroom in aweek. Look at the picture below.<br />

MATERIALS:<br />

• a cement brick (not the shiny dark red or orange bricks)<br />

• a large plastic container (like the bottom half of aplastic cool<br />

drink bottle)<br />

• a bottle of white vinegar.<br />

Vinegar acid is working on the surface of the cement brick.<br />

Parts of the brick are falling o.<br />

INSTRUCTIONS:<br />

1. Put the cement brick into the container.<br />

2. Pour enough of the vinegar into the plastic container to cover<br />

half of the brick.<br />
