cicindela, a glowworm; which has no particular application to these in­<br />

Medium-sized, elongated and usually slender, somewhat flattened or nearly<br />

cylindrical land beetles, which are characterized by their swift movements,<br />

long, dentate, curved mandibles, and long slender legs. The integument is<br />

parchment-like or hard and usually smooth, punctate, or somewhat hairy<br />

ventrally; somber-colored or mostly brilliant metallic green, blue, red, yellow,<br />

and rainbow hues with stripes, spots, and many combinations of colors. Head<br />

prognathous, large, free. Antennre inserted above the bases of the mandibles,<br />

simple, filiform, ll-segmented. Eyes prominent. Mouth parts well developed.<br />

Clypeus extending laterally over the bases of the antennre. Mandibles large<br />

and formidable. Galea two-segmented. Lacinia terminating in a movable<br />

segment or hook. Prothorax free, usually no wider than the head, with epimera<br />

and episterna distinct. Wings usually well developed and permitting very<br />

rapiq. flight; absent in Omus and other genera. Elytra often beautifully colored,<br />

usually completely covering the body or exposing the prolonged tip of the<br />

abdomen; fused along the median line in Omus. Legs long and slender. Tibial<br />

spurs present. Tarsi five-segmented. Claws paired. The abdomen is often
