subfamilies and many important genera. Among the latter may be mentioned<br />

Chlorochroa Stal, Cosmopepla Thomas, Euchistus Dallas, Eurydema<br />

Laporte, Eusarcoris Hahn, Murgantia SHil, Nezara Amyot and Serville, Pentatoma<br />

Olivier, Perillus Stal, Podisus Herrich-Shreffer, Sericoris Fallen, Strachia<br />

Hahn, Thyallta Still.<br />

The most important North American species is probably the harlequin cabbage<br />

bug, MUTgantia histrionica Halm" a black and red species often also<br />

marked with white, yellow, and orange, 8-11 mm. long, which is a pest of a<br />

wide variety of plants, including cabbage and other cruciferous 1 plants.<br />

Other important species in this country are: the conchuela, Chlorochroa ligata<br />

(Say); Say's plant bug, C. sayi Stal; Euchistus impicUventris Stal; Cosmopepla<br />

bimaculata (Thomas); Thyanta custator (Fab.); Nezara viridula (Linn.), also<br />

reported in Europe, Japan, India, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand; and<br />

the green soldier bug, AcrQsternum hilare (Say), Among the beneficial predacious<br />

forms may be listed the members of the genus Brochymena and particularly<br />

the widely distributed B. arborea (Say) and B. 4-pustulata (Fab.); the<br />

anchorage bug, Stire/1us anchorag'J (Fab.), the bioculate predacious bug,<br />

Peril/us bioculatus (Fab.), and members of the genus Apateticus. especially<br />

A. cynicus (Say) and A. crocatus (Uhler).<br />

Certain species are responsible for carrying fungous diseases of plants in<br />

tropical regions.<br />

1 ButT ada pieta Fab. is a pest of cruciferous crops in India. and two species of EU'rydema<br />

feed on similar crops in Japan.
