Family BOOPIIDJE Mjoberg 1910 (Boop-i'-i-dre, from the Greek (30W7rtS,<br />

ox-eyed; referring to the relatively large eyes). Biting Kangaroo Lice.<br />

A small family composed of four genera and 13 species, all infesting kangaroos<br />

and wallabies and confined to Australia. The genus Boopia Piaget con-<br />

tains eight species having four-segmented palpi. The two species of Latumcephalum<br />

Le Soiief have two-segmented palpi. The members of the genus<br />

Heterodoxus Le Soiief and Bullen have spines on the underside of the head and<br />

constitute two species.<br />

Family TRIMENOPONIDlE Harrison 1917 (Tri-men'o-pon'i-dre, from the<br />

Greek rpLa, three, + Menopon; referring to the three thoracic segments).<br />

A small family including the genera: Harrisonia Ferris, Trimenopon Cummings,<br />

Philandesia Kell. and Nakayama, and Cummingsia Ferris occurring on<br />

rodents in Central and South America.<br />

Family MENOPONID.lE MjBberg 1910 (Men-o-pon'i-dre, from the Greek<br />

f..Ihw, to remain, + 7roJ!os, pain; because of their annoyance to the hosts?).<br />

Biting Bird Lice.<br />

A large family of widely distributed species infesting birds and particularly<br />

troublesome to domestic fowls. Among the most important species are the<br />

common hen louse, Menopon gallinl£ Linn. (M. pallidum Nitzsch), a small,<br />

pale-yellow species 1.0-1.5 mm. long, which infests poultry including chickens,<br />

ducks, and pigeons and is probably the most destructive member in the order;
