CH O R A L SE RVICES
Services are normally sung by King’s College Choir on Sundays and from
Tuesdays to Saturdays. Services on Mondays are sung by King’s Voices,
the College’s mixed voice choir. Exceptions are listed.

Each Saturday during term time there is an organ recital at 6.30 p.m.
until 7.15 p.m. Admission is free, and there is a retiring collection. There
is no recital on 28 January.

HO LY WE E K A N D EA S T ER SE RVICES
The eighth Easter at King’s festival takes place this year. The services
feature masses by Frank Martin and Haydn, and on Good Friday Allegri
Miserere and Tallis Lamentations (Part II) will be sung. Major choral
and orchestral works will include Bach St Matthew Passion, MacMillan
Seven Last Words from the Cross and Elgar The Apostles. Among the
distinguished artists appearing in these and other concerts are former
chorister Guy Johnston, former choral scholar James Gilchrist (KC 1985)
and former organ scholar, Professor John Butt (KC 1979).
MU S I C
On Saturday 28 January at Evensong there is a further opportunity to
hear Tansy Davies’s setting of Christina Rossetti’s poem Christmas Eve,
which was commissioned by the College for A Festival of Nine Lessons
and Carols in 2011. Thomas Adès (KC 1989) wrote The Fayrfax Carol
to a similar commission in 1997 and this will be heard as part of a
broadcast evensong on Wednesday 29 February, which will begin with
Cities and Thrones and Powers, a setting of words by Rudyard Kipling by
Alexander Goehr, formerly Professor of Music in the University. This
was commissioned for Choirbook for the Queen, a collection marking the
Diamond Jubilee this year of HM The Queen, and will be receiving its
première on this occasion. To mark the Queen’s Accession, Evensong on
the eve (Sunday 5 February) will include the Magnificat from the Great
ServiceoftheElizabethancomposerWilliamByrd, andhisanthemOLord,
make thy servant Elizabeth. The Diamond Jubilee is further celebrated in
the Foundation Concert on Saturday 17 March, when Sir Philip Ledger
(Director of Music 1974–1982) will conduct Elgar Coronation Ode.
