There have been a lot of things happening regarding childcare and the Government is working hard to get everyone on the same page. Their aim is to have a National Standard, so all states and territories are working under the same rules. At this stage it is simply an introduction. To do this they created The Early Years Learning Framework. Now this didn’t happen overnight!!! There was lots of yarning and lots of information gathered from all kinds of people working with kids in many different fields. That gave us a good picture of what kids need. In a nutshell, the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) wants “All children have the best start in life to create a better future for themselves and for the nation” Kids also need quality teaching and learning. Play- based learning is really promoted and there is importance on language, literacy and communication as well as social and emotional development. The framework recognizes that early childhood educators work in partnership with families, the child’s first and most influential educators. different fields. That gave us a good picture of what kids need.
In a nutshell, the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) wants
“All children have the best start in life to create a better future for
themselves and for the nation”
Kids also need quality teaching and learning. Play- based learning is really
promoted and there is importance on language, literacy and
communication as well as social and emotional development.
The framework recognizes that early childhood educators
work in partnership with families, the child’s first and most
influential educators.
The framework is a guide for childhood educators and will reinforce the
principles in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
“The convention states that all children have the right to an education that
lays the foundation for the rest of their lives, maximizes their
ability, and respects their family, cultural and other identities and
languages. The convention also recognizes children’s right to play and be active
participants in all matters affecting their lives.”
To help us do this, a vision for children’s learning was created,
Belonging, Being and Becoming. ( Things IPSU services are all about!!)
Let’s look closer at these three headings.
Children are connected to family, community, culture and place, even
before birth. The child grows and develops through these relationships,
especially with families who are the child’s first teacher.
Belonging, is knowing where you belong and who you belong with. Children
belong to a family, a culture, a neighborhood and the wider community.
Relationships are formed within these groups and those relationships help the
child to develop into who they can become.
Being, is the here and now in a child’s life. Childhood is a time to make meaning
of the world. It is about the child knowing themselves, getting to know others,
living and enjoying life and meeting challenges everyday.
Happy early years helps kids in the present and prepares them for the future.
Becoming, is changes the kids experience as they grow, learn and
develop. Children’s identities, knowledge, understandings, skills, and
relationships change through childhood. We want kids to participate fully and
be active in society.
The framework wants and expects the best for all children’s learning from
birth to five years and the transition to school.
Many of you have considered these things as you observe, programme, evaluate
and reflect on the work you do with the kids in your care. Some of you may
have heard these terms for the first time. We hope this fact sheet has made
it a little clearer for you.
That was a lot of reading right there!!
But it was important to share with you the background and the reasons behind what the
Government and the Early Years Learning Framework (ELYF) is trying to achieve for our
kids.
You are a huge part of that with the deadly things you do at your centre.
If we try to be the best we can be, as we work with the kids, then we can guide the children
to be the best they can be. That is a proper rewarding thing to be able to do!!
Attached to this fact sheet you will find some deadly posters you can put up in your centre.
They are an example of what you can do with photos of your own centre, kids and community
They will act as a reminder of the things you have read here today.
They will encourage you, as you work with the kids.
Belonging, Being, Becoming, will inspire you to encourage kids to be all that they can be.
