INTRODUCTION
DERWENT REGISTRY COMPOUNDS
This manual contains two lists in alphabetical
order by name of common compounds
which can be searched in CPI by a Derwent
Registry Number. The first list containing
about 2,100 compoWlds has been used for CPI
Sections B,C and E from Week 8127 (D27) and
from 1984 for CPI Sections D and F to M.
The second list containing about 750 compounds
is applicable to CPI Section A (Plasdoc).
There are about 300 compounds common to
both lists and for these the searchable 4 digit
registry numbers is the same in both cases.
As far as possible, commoner synonyms have
been included for ease of reference. In addition
there is a listing in compound number order.
GENERAL APPLICATION
RNs are applied to all compoWlds and nonmetallic
elements (which are covered by list),
specifically mentioned in the claims or
examples, with the exception of the following:
(i) ingredients in compositions which
are unimportant to the invention (e.g.
specific solvents where any solvent
may be used);
(ii) auxiliaries (solvents, HCl scavengers,
etc.) in reactions only in Sections B,
C and E, which are Wlimportant to
the invention (a full definition of
auxiliaries is given in I.M. 3A).
SEARCHING
Each RN indexed is assigned one of three
roles as follows, separated from it by a hyphen:
P - compounds produced (by reaction,
purification, extraction, etc.);
S starting material, reagents (au.''Ciliaries
only in Sections B, C and E);
U use of a compound (excluding S),
ingredient in composition, compound
detected, analysed, tested or
removed.
Thus production of sodium chloride is
searched online as 1706-P/RN, and all references
to sodium chloride searched as l706/RN.
SECTIONS B TO M APPLICATION
A generic RN is usually only included in
the Section B to M registry list where the
compounds covered by the RN have the same
fragmentation code s (although they will not be
coded by the chemical code if the patent is
classified in D or F to M and not in B,C or E),
or for an acidic (or basic) compoWld and its
salts. This applies to the following groups of
compounds, except where specific forms are
provided for (and cross-referenced);
(a) stereoisomers, e.g. 1210 (ALANINE)
covers D- L- and DL-alanine
(b) different physical forms, e.g. 1694
(SI -DIOXIDE) covers silica, quartz,
sand etc.
(c) compounds and their hydrates, e.g.
1767 (CA-SULFATE) covers CaSO'l'
CaS04.2HzO, gypsum etc., and 0387
(CHLORAL) also covers chloral
hydrate
(d) organic bases, hydrazine or hydroxylamine
and their acid addition salts,
e.g. 0048 (EPINEPHRINE) covers the
base and its salts
(e) onium salts, e.g. 1633 (PARAQUAT)
cover s the dichloride, dibromide etc.
(fi acidic organic compounds and their
metal (or ammonium) salts, e.g. 0222
(BENZYL-PENICILLIN) covers the
free acid, Na and K salts etc.
(g) variable oxidation state metal salts,
e.g. 1935 (FE-SULFIDE) covers
ferrous sulfide, iron disulfide, iron
sulfide, iron pyrites etc.
(h) compounds and their isotopic or
radioactive analogues, e.g. 1781
(CHLORINE) is used for elemental
chlorine, chlorine-35, chlorine-36
etc.
(i) a few other groups of compounds
whose member s all have the same
fragmentation codes, e.g. 2046
(HEPTENE) covers n-heptene (gen.),
l-n-heptene, 2 -n-heptene, 3-n-heptene
and trans -2 -heptene etc.
One exception is that a few very commonly
occurring mixtures of compounds (e.g. nitrogen
oxide mixture) are assigned generic RNs;
the se RN s are applied only to the mixturesand
never to single compounds. For acid addition
salts or organic bases and for onium salts the
anion is not normally assigned an RN (or
fragmentation codes) unless important to the
invention.
RNs for polymeric compounds are only
applied to references in CPI Sections B and C.
Free metals are not included in the registry
list (apart from germanium).
REGISTRY NUMBERS AND B,C,E
FRAGMENTATION CODING
In CPI Sections B, C and E, chemical
structures and compounds may also be searched
using fragmentation coding. A detailed description
of the facility is given in LM.3A and
LM.3D. The fragmentation coding is applied
to:
(i) end products of reactions,
(ii) novel starting materials and
intermediates,
(iii) compounds analysed, tested or
detected;
(iv) compounds used, other than as
starting materials;
(v) important ingredients in
compositions,
regardless of whether they are in the registry
list, where the appear in the patent
(disclosure, examples or claims) or if they
are a Markush structure.
I.M.2E-p.l Iss.:\o.2. Jnnuary 198i
Hence a fragmentation code search will
directly retrieve such materials entered as
RNs. However, other material s (e. g. starting
materials which are not novel) are retrievable
only by RNs. Searching using RNs will give
more specific but less complete retrieval than
using fragmentation coding.
Example
The production of sodium chloride (NaCl)
is searched on-line as 1706 -P/RN, the use of
p-bromotoluene as 0782 -U/RN, N -bromosuccinimide
as a starting material as 1089
S/RN and any reference to sodium chloride
as 1706/RN.
PAGE NUMBERING
The pages which follow have been taken
directly from I.M.3A and LM.4A and retain
the page numbering of those manuals. In the
case of the list for Sections B to M, this list
has been in operation as far as CPI Sections
B, C and E are concerned since week 8127 and
several of the pages have been reissued since
that time. Such pages carry at the bottom
right hand corner, the number and date of
issue.
PLASDOC REGISTRY COMPOUNDS
Retrieval of specific compounds as
additives and catalysts for polymers in
Plasdoc prior to 1984 was very lilIlited. Such
compounds could generally be searched only
as their function e.g. plasticiser, stabiliser,
Friedel-C rafts catalyst etc.
From the beginning of 1984 (8401) it is
possible to retrieve about 750 commonly
occuring compounds given in the following
alphabetical list. Each compound is assigned
a Registry Number (RN), one or more such
numbers being assigned to each patent, where
applicable. The RN for any compound already
present in the List for CPI Sections B to M
(see I.M.2E) will be the same as that used at
present. Those compounds (about 400) not
already included will be assigned RNs
commencing from 5.000.
FORMAT AND APPLICATION
Each entry in capital letters is followed
by the standard four digit RN. Please note
the following:-
(i) The list contains a few classes of
compounds. An entry for such a
class is followed by the letters NCE
(not classified elsewhere). Immediately
below the entry are listed all
cOlIlpounds belonging to the class
having their own unique RNs. Any
specific cOlIlpound not listed will be
assigned the RN corresponding to the
generic class. As an example dibutyl
adipate is searched using 5115, but
diethyl adipate has no specific RN
and can only be searched as 5005
(Adipic acid esters NCE).
A list containing all the classes of
compounds is provided at the end of
this Introduction.
(ii) A:D.y note within brackets, may follow"
immediately below the main entry.
If a note 'See also--_ I is followed by a
RN, then thi s RN should not be used
for searching the main entry. This
note points to a related term available
for, usually, wider searching.
As an example, under the entry zinc
acetate is given the note (see also
Acetic acid (0247». This note is only
given as cross-reference and 0247
should not be searched for zinc
acetate.
(iii) All the rules described under the
heading 'Sections B to M application'
on p.l of the Intro. to I.M.2E also
apply to Plasdoc Registry Compounds.
In particular please remember:-
(a) The RN for an organic acid
includes all metal salts thereof
unless these are specificalty
excluded in a note below the
acid. All the salts which are
excluded have their own specific
RNs.
(iv)
(b) Variable oxidation state metal
salt includes all salts e.g. Iron
chloride (1939) includes both
ferrous and ferric chlorides.
The one exception is titanium
chloride where specific RN s are
available for the trivalent and
tetravalent titanium chloride.
A limited number of synonyms have
been included in the list.
ROLES IN PLASDOC RNs
Each RN is assigned one of three roles
(same as Chemical Code RNs)
P - Production (by reaction, purification
etc.)
S - Starting material
U - Use (excluding-S) e.g. in polymer
compositions
INDEXING APPROACH
RNs from the list are applied to all
registry compounds present in the claims or
examples except for those which are unimportant
e.g. specific solvents where any
solvent may be used.
REGISTRY NUMBER CONTROL CODE 014
To facilitate retrieval of Plasdoc RNs
from 1984 only, each Plasdoc record is assigned
the three digit control code 014 from 8401. Use
of this code will avoid hits resulting from earlier
Chemical Code RNs and facilitate searching of
the Plasdoc Code with RNs.
SEARCHING
The following points should be borne in
mind.
(i) The Chemical Code RNs are assigned
from 1981 (week D27) and those of
Plasdoc Code from 8401. Some registry
compounds (approx. 300) are common to
both Codes.
(ii) A RN can be searched with or without a
role (truncation is not necessary) e.g.
for production or acetyl peroxide search
5003-P/RN. For all references search
5003/RN.
(iii) A registry compound may have more
than one function e.g. triphenyl phosphate
can function as a plasticiser as
well as a flame retardant.
Examples
Asbestos filler
5024/RNAND 22l5/KS
(014 is not needed as
5024/RN only applies from
1984)
(B) RNs and Plasdoc Code
All additives and catalysts for polymers
(CPI Section A) are retrievable (usually by
function only) using the Plasdoc punch code,
fully described in Instruction Manuals 4A and
4B, and the Plasdoc Code Dictionary (I.MAF).
For references prior to 1984 use of the
Plasdoc Code is necessary. The materials
classified in Plasdocand Sections B,C and/or E
may also be searched using the Chemical Code
fragmentation codes.
An example using the Standard Plasdoc
Code Search Strategy Form, which includes a
search statement for Plasdoc RNsis given
below. The search logic can be searched on
both WPI and WPIL file s.
