Company profile
WHEATOLEO results from the alliance between OLEON and ARD. OLEON is a Belgian
company specialized in converting natural fats and oils into a wide range of oleochemicals,
such as fatty acids, glycerin, fatty alcohols, esters and dimers. ARD is a private research
center which aims at promoting plant resources in industrial applications. ARD is involved in
plant fractionation, green chemistry, and industrial biotechnology. ARD develops innovating,
competitive products friendly to the environment within the vision of industrial sustainability
and ecology. WHEATOLEO benefits from the R&D expertise of ARD and the production
capacity of OLEON to develop a range of fully natural surfactants based on pentosides.
Application fields
WHEATOLEO develops natural surfactants for a wide range of applications:
Cosmetic & Toiletries
Green Detergency (Home Care and I&I)
Agrochemicals
Solvents
Sustainable raw materials
Through the bio-refinery concept, our strategy is to valorize the
whole field crops for industrial applications. Our raw materials
are fully renewable and widely available. This results in cost
effective and high quality products. The polar head of our
surfactants is made of sugars coming from agricultural byproducts
(wheat bran and straw), which cannot be used for
human consumption. WHEATOLEO surfactants do not enter
into competition with food stuffs. The lipophilic tail of our
surfactants is made of natural fatty alcohols obtained from
coconut and sugar beet.
Environmentally friendly surfactants
RADIA® EASYSURF surfactants are ideal candidates for use in green formulations such
as Ecolabel products. They show rapid and ultimate biodegradability through the OECD
301F test whilst demonstrating very low ecotoxicity for the major sensitive aquatic species.
Additionally, they are PEG free, not source of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and
contain no preservatives.
Unique surfactant behavior
Pentoses derived from wheat bran and straw have the main advantage of being more
reactive than glucose during the glycosilation which occurs quickly at low temperature
resulting in a low consumption of energy. The second advantage of our original and patented
approach is the possibility to better control polymerization degree. Third advantage, the low
temperature synthesis avoids a strong coloration thus reducing post-treatments.
Compared to glucose based surfactants, the polymerization degree is lower and the
hydrophilic head is smaller. Consequently, our surfactants are more lipophilic and show a
highly dynamic behavior. This results in unique properties such as lower CMC, lower
surface tension and better wetting and degreasing capabilities.
