THE GARDENER.<br />

This ballad contains some beautiful poetical allu-<br />

sions, <strong>and</strong> seems to be of an ancient cast. The two last<br />

lines of each stanza are repeated in singing.<br />

The gard'ner st<strong>and</strong>s in his bouer door,<br />

Wi' a primrose in his h<strong>and</strong>,<br />

And bye there cam a leal* maiden,<br />

As jimpf as a willow w<strong>and</strong>;<br />
